Default Ever feel like,....

Do you ever look around you at work and think,....Why am I even here? ( Question mainly for those who dont make a living with photography. ) I do so much at work,..even to be a lowly lil cashier,..and yet my good skills go un-noticed. As soon as I say something about not wanting to be there to a co-worker, and one bitchy manager over hears it,....I'm being called into "the office". It's like being in school again, and being called to the principles office. So, I get sent home early today,..not sure if I even have a job anymore. Do I care? No. The place is a joke anyways. I've been trying to find something to replace it with for a while now. The only thing that kept me there was the pay,..like $9.10 an hour is really that great after being there for 3 years. One of our cart pushers, who's only been there a year, makes $.40 more than me. Yeah, I feel so appreciated and like you really want to keep me. I'm one of the best cashiers that they have,... and yet they have no idea how good I really am. The only one that seems to realize it, is the Loss Prevention Manager. Does it matter that my co-workers if given a vote, would elect me to be a Head Cashier? Does it matter that I'm one of the fastest and yet accurate cashiers in the store? Does it matter that I know my job well, and that others look to me to be a leader? Nope,...what matters is that I actually WANT to be there. Oh yeah! I'm thrilled to walk into a job every day that really isnt doing much for me.

Sorry,...just had to rant. I already kinda did on Facebook,...wasnt out of my system yet.

I know this may sound childish,.. and I can already hear the words of "life isnt always fair, you cant always get what you want." I know that,...but I dont see why when something really isnt working for you anymore, why do people feel the need to stick with it? I refuse to conform to idea that even if you really despise something, you should tough it out and stick with it. I say, if you can change something you dont like,..then Do something about it! Dont just sit there and take it,...you only get one life,...why muddle through it unhappy? You cant change everything, but for the things that you can,... GO FOR IT!

I can sympathize with you. It's the worst feeling in the world stuck in a job that you feel is going nowhere. Maybe it's time to move on. Sounds like you've out grown the job and it's time to start a fresh.

I don't have a brilliant, sparkling career as I am just a lil 'ol school dinner lady who works 2 hours a day in serving kids their dinner (plus washing up) but what I do bring to the job is my cheerful, personality. It's always service with a smile for me and what's more I am the only person who has actually stuck it out. I work with special needs kids and other dinner ladies in the past have been afraid of the kids .

Sometimes even the crummiest job you can make it work for you. If I feel that its no longer filling a need it's then time to move on.

I'm in a rush. Got to take my daughter for her 9 am swimming lesson and it's already 08.27 got t go

I know exactly how you feel, I can empathise completely and I agree with candidrachel's advice. I did the same thing, moved to a "lesser" job just to escape and after a year I was recognised and gained a relatively privileged position with my new employers. It's still not great job but at least I feel like I'm valued, even if they do pay an absolute pittance.

Sorry you feel that way about your job, it sucks when things are that bad. And its not always as easy as it sounds these days to just wander off and find another job. Personally I love my job - I enjoy the work, the challenges and especially the people I work with. Sometimes it can be frustrating when things don't go right, or when the 'system' isn't working properly, or when some people are being dicks but in the end, it all makes for great work stories! Unfortunately its only part time and it takes me away from my kids but the pay is good.

I often feel that way at my job...

... it's a fairly soul crushing industry despite what the general population thinks.

A little ego-stroking goes a long way. I'm the project lead for the project I'm currently working which has me away from my wife for weeks at a time. My boss has told me that she is surprised at the level of "ownership" I have of the project. I have never really like being the boss, and I have no intentions of ever being the boss, but it feels good that I'm being recognized for the job I'm doing.

Maybe you should start tapering off your "extra mile" for your coworkers and see what happens.

The worst feeling in the world is when you feel pissed on and passed over. I used to get that feeling many times in other jobs (mainly office jobs for some strange reason) and during meetings I'd suggest things and it would either get ignored or scorned upon and then 6 months later some bloke in a suit would suggest the exact same thing and get all the credit for my idea! That was 12 years ago and from that moment on I thought well I'll just get pregnant and leave and haven't looked back.

Office work just isn't for me. I'd much rather work on my own which is where my current work really pays off because I work in my own little unit, making the job my own and get respected and everyone pat me on the back for a job well done and its a great feeling!

I know how you feel. I can remember one or two jobs over the years like that. Mostly I've been lucky enough to do work that I love. I loved being the communications/public relations person for an opera company here. Did that for five years. Now I'm out on my butt, with someone younger and male in my old job.
My recently current boss as well as my previous boss have nothing but good to say about me. My reviews were all excellent. Still I have no job. I know I could file a discrimination suit, but they had that covered with offering me some severance as the carrot to make me sign away my rights, I needed the $. So you know what I did.
Guess what I'm trying to say is that even when you love what you do, it still might bite you in the ass! Hoping I get something soon - marketing/pr people are a dime a dozen in this town! And hoping that you do, too!
So, fairie goddess (how I love your handle!) good luck to you in finding something fulfilling - keep us posted and I'll do the same!

Thanks guys. I'm starting to get that Office Space feeling. Where I just want to take the register that I work on and chuck it out the door, and beat the ever loving ------ out of it. Where I want to just blow the joint, and do it with style. Tell everyone that I don't like, what they can go do with themselves, and give the friends that I have made, my phone number so we can still keep in touch. " Don't make me go all Office Space on this place,...ok?" :P
