Default What to do?

So, I have recently come into some money...

I am getting a refund check from my school thanks to my scholarship. I know the wise thing to do would be to put this money ($3000) towards paying off a personal loan I had to take out to pay for summer classes.

But...I really want the Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L.

Any advice from those out of college?

No advice but the 24-70 f/2.8 is a great lens. My wife loves her's and doesn't let me get anywhere near it for fear that she would never get it back hehe.

Would the lens help you pay off the personal loan?

Nah. The force is strong in you. It's drawing you to the lens.

Be aware that loan payments can add up once you graduate (I know, between my husband and I we have about 30K in student debt!) BUT if you are talking 3000 on a 30000 loan its not gonna make a difference really.. if you are talking 3k on a 4k loan.. Id have to go with paying it off.. sorry!

+1 on paying off the loan. The financial burden loans put on you once you graduate are hard to imagine while you're in school, but it can really take a toll. The less you owe on the escape from education the better.

I am also firmly in the camp of paying off loans. Really. It does matter.

If you want to start making money from your kit
sell the 28-135 and the 18-55. ($400?)
Get the 24-70 AND new body. (50D, or 7D)

Not sure how the loan situation is overall.... but first choice for me would also be to clear debt. It follows you like a bad smell.
