can someone tell the difference between the regular full version of lightroom 3 for $299. and the student/teacher full version of lightroom 3 for half that price? Someone told me they were exactly the same except you couldn't upgrade the student/teacher version? Is that correct?

I know that the student version is exactly the same as the full retail version. On the Adobe website it states to contact the Adobe Education online store or a reseller to find out about upgrading. I've heard that they'll allow one upgrade.

Also I do believe that with the Student / Teacher edition you're not allowed to use it for commercial use.

Meanwhile, the upgrade to full price is the same price as a new version of the student / teacher version, so the lack of upgrade pricing isn't really too big of an issue.

Around us (Europe) the student version of LR3 is sold as "Educational Box" wich means it can be upgraded and used for commercial purposes. For the Creative Suite exist two versions, a student version (can't be upgraded, used commercialy) and the "Educational Box". LR3 ist only sold as educational box.

I bought my first version of LR as student, and upgraded two times since that. Of course it might be that the license is different in America.

why would anyone purchase the full version if they could get the student version then? Do you need to show some kind of proof or something?

It's different depending on the countries (or so I've heard). When I bought LR2, there were no commercial limitations on it. On the page for buying LR3, there is a big bold notice on the cheapest one that you can't use it for commercial purposes. From Ascent Technology:

Please read before purchasing: This product is intended for educational and non-commercial use.

That's on the education version. Oddly enough, on the student & teacher version that warning is missing.

And @justlearning, yes, you have to show them a current student ID from a qualifying program before you get your license key.
