Romans weren't really big on numbers so sometimes they wrote nine as ix and sometimes as viii. They did marvellous engineering projects using analog solutions, but could you mulltiply mdccx11 by cxv1 as easily as 1712x116? Thank India for the 0 which allowed our current number system.
