Hi Mike,
Here are some shots from the island of Kos in Greece. These were taken in the main town of Kos, which is really small by European or American standards and about 25 miles from where I live. I'm at the southern end and this town is about as far as the island goes to the north The last time I checked the whole island only had 25,000 people as the resident winter population.

This is of the municipal market in the main square. I took this from a table at the cafe opposite.

municipal market

This one is just a typical street scene, shot on the fly as I walked around.

This is taken at the harbour when the fish had been brought in. This is very small scale with individual men going out in their boats and offering what they manage to catch for sale at the harbour side.

Hope you've all enjoyed these. I will get out and about in the village where I live sometime soon and post some shots from there.

Jake, I enjoyed very much. I have the same question as Freezeframe....the pub next to the church? Doesn't happen much where I live. A village can be so much prettier when everything is well kept.

[QUOTE=freezeframe03;532238]This is a really small town that we like to ride to. It's Dundee, Wisconsin. If you are noticing some faint dark squares all over the photo, it's because I took the shot through a window screen while sitting in the enclosed porched of our favorite bar that serves the very best ever hamburgers.

This town was put on the map by the TV show, Extreme Home Makeover. They built the home in the background. It still looks as good as the day the home was finished. They also completed the water mill that the man had spent so much of his time trying to restore before he died. We visited the mill last summer and it doesn't seem to be looked after. I've always had mixed feelings regarding this episode of the tv show...the man put the restoration of the mill above and first over the care of his family and the home they were living in. It seems fitting that the home now appears well cared for while the mill is left to deteriorate anew. (Just my personal opinion)

I'd like to have some of those very best ever hamburgers. I was in the mood for a hamburger this weekend and was so sorely disappointed. If I'm up in your neck of the woods, I'd love to try out that place. I agree it is a shame to work on a mill to the detriment of your family. I hop the rest of the family will stay close.

Teresa, These are gorgeous! And you live on an island? How cool is that? You also mentioned resident winter population. Do you have a lot of people that winter there? Thanks for posting. I am loving the chance to see a glimpse of your world!

Only in a small town could you have a Larry's! We bought some furniture from Larry's. Larry's furniture is a sprawling complex with about 5 storefronts. We went from building to building to building and looked at all of their stock. When we came back to buy, the saleslady couldn't remember the pieces we were talking about. Luckily enough, the delivery guys were nearby and said "Those got moved upstairs." So we got in the old elevator with the scissors doors and reambled upstairs where we found them. Here's a collage of Larry's storefronts.

It is a good question Mike. Typical english villages are all similar and the pub and the church are two major meeting points for the community and most villages have both. Due to the size of these quaint villages they are inevitably close to one another. Some villages like one I went to a short while ago, have a church and five pubs lol.. Most of the also have a local village hall where small events take place. These villages have very close knit communities and the church and the pubs bring the people together. I hope that has answered your question. I am always here if you want to know more.

Jake.

Default Marquette, Michigan

Marquette may be the biggest "city" in the Upper Peninsula, but at about 20,000 people it sure seems like a small town after years of living in Atlanta (also seems a bit chilly!)

First image is the lighthouse from the park along the Lake Superior shoreline. The second is Front Street--one of the two main streets in town. The third is the Ore Dock -- this one is no longer in use, but another just outside of town is still used to load iron ore on to lakers which sail to other Great Lakes ports. The fourth one is the downtown from the Lower Harbor region (it was taken looking back at town from the park that is near the ore dock).

Hope you enjoy!

Alan -- It seems a bit chilly? I think that's the understatement of the year! I'm such a wus...I couldn't wait for winter to end and how many times a year does it get below 20 degrees in Atlanta--5, maybe 10 during the really cold years? Thanks for contributing. I love your shots. The second one is intriguing. It looks like a turn of the century Victorian kind of clocktower has been stuck on top of a building built in the 90's. Hope you're enjoying your new environs!

Gwenie -- Love your church post! Very interesting architecture and you can tell it's old. I'm a sucker for any old church and I see it's in Brentwood right where you live. Is there a lot of other old stuff in Brentwood?

Default Oakland, OR

This is downtown Oakland, OR. Both blocks. It is where I call home. The dates on the buildings vary in the late 1700's to early 1800's. At one time, this was the turkey capital of the world. Pop. was 500, but after the new census, it may have jumped up to 900.

This used to be the flour mill. Now it's an antique shop. Of which this town has many.
