For this shot I set up on my tripod next to our campsite in Joshua Tree. The fire lit the foreground pretty nicely. I shot this at ISO 1600, f/2.8 and 30" shutter speed with long exposure noise reduction on. Once I got it on the computer the only thing I did was sharpen and adjust the black point slightly.
When shooting the stars remember your normal composition rules, it is especially important to have a foreground element.
