What exactly are you expecting?
Most contests have entry fees.
All contests have a judge or judges who select a couple of winners
All contests then give a prize of money, awards or some goods of some description.

That is what contests are.

"legit" in the photographic contest world is where there is no copyright grab and any use of the images entered is beneficial to the photographer as well as the company.

p.s.
Wildlife photographer of the year - paid entry
press photographer of the year - paid entry unless you are a member of the bppa
International garden photographer of the year - paid entry
They are just three prestigious photography competitions and all have paid entry
all are judged by panels or individuals
all give out prizes

I guess you would call them "raffles" as well though.

I'm not expecting anything, and yes I would call them something of a raffle... I seldom understand what judges pick, but that's "art".

My surprise was at some competitions in the link such as this one: Photos2Win Photo Contest Website
The prize is directly proportional to the number of entry fees paid in.... Seems like a scheme to raise money more than a real competition.

Of course, no-one does anything for "free"....
But I find it kind of ironic that you could win "wildlife photographer of the year" by getting lucky (i.e. submitting one lucky shot) or based upon a small portfolio of images taken over the last three years.

I actually thought most of those types of awards were more "recognition awards" and not paid entry competitions....

Hmm, I'm a little disappointed honestly.....but I suppose it also means I could win such an award with a little luck and enough money.

And if you read my post I said I could not vouch for the veracity of any of the competitions on that site.

You could win with enough money etc....... NOT in a decent competition as entrants are normally limited to xx entries.

What you "thought" and what is in fact the case are different and the vast majority of competitions are paid entry, even the international salon type of contests.

Any photography contest is going to be subject to the vagaries of the judge/judging panel and off course a single "lucky" shot could win.

Bottom line, if you don't think they are worth it then don't enter - pretty easy really.
