Because the assignments (and thus contests) are about pushing and developing people's skills. Most of the time we do aim to be inclusive but, in order to present a broad curriculum, we will sometimes draw on subjects that require specific capabilities

If you really have a passion to try and come up with a winning shot (for all that is worth) then you can probably find the money to get a second-hand, entry level DSLR; if you just want to participate, we've already made provision for that with the parallel theme.

Compared to most photographic contests, I think we provide a very low bar for entry!

im sorry but i have to agree with the mods, why should all those with DSLRs be restricted to point and shoot capabilities? This is a photographic training site. I do what I can with my point and shoot and am grateful for somewhere to share my shots where I feel I can compete with higher standard cameras when the opportunity presents itself. In the meantime I am saving for a better camera and will look back for ideas when I do get it.

Well said, Lucyhelen. Additionally, many cameras whose sales pitches emphasize the point-and-shoot ease of use actually have capabilities beyond that. Owners should check their manuals or otherwise study up (via internet, maybe) on what their cameras can do. If the camera has options other than just "AUTO," perhaps the equivalent of f/16 can be reached. Experiment and check what the EXIF data shows.

Wow, I don't partipate in assignments for a few weeks, and I come back to controversy!! Haha.

I second what Alpha said above me. My point and shoot, which is 3 or 4 years old, has a full manual mode in it, and you can alter the Apperture. So, have a play and a looksy and find out. Both my brothers' cameras are the same. But, either way, the RYB challenge sounds just as fun --- I almost want to do that instead! Haha.
