I am a newby and currently have an Olympus Evolt. I take candid portraits with natural light. When I looked to upgrade my lense I realized that I should have probably purchased a Cannon or Nikon. Which camera would you suggest and what lense?

under 1k? i'd look at what type of photography you'll want to use it for first then look at the price of glass. get the best glass you can. for that price range i'd go with a canon 40d and get some tokina glass. the tokina glass is made for crop sensors but it's some pretty sharp glass. the 40d isn't the top of the line anymore but it will get you by in most situations and is a nice starter camera since prices have dropped dramatically.
