Default Large Format?

Pardon this rookie question, but with the advent of high megapixel resolutions in 35mm size SLR bodies, is there a reason for Large Format Digital Cameras and do they exist?

I think some landscape photographers will love an affordable and wide dynamic range large format camera.

There exist "scanning backs" for 4x5 view cameras. They are a little on the expensive side and take a long time to capture an image (on the order of a minute to minutes). Here's info from one manufacturer.

It's also not just a matter of sensor resolution but lens resolution as well. 35mm film has very high resolution, probably comparable to a 20 MP - 30 MP sensor, but many photographers chose larger formats for the superior image quality. With 35mm film, you have to enlarge the captured image quite a bit to get reasonably sized prints. This puts a lot of demand on the lens to provide enough fine detail that can be enlarge 10 or 20 times and still look good. With large format films the enlargements relative to the captured image were much smaller, making it much easier for a lens to deliver sharp images with good tonal qualities. So on a 35 MP sensor, you may have enough pixels to print very large but those pixels may not be giving you anymore detail because of limitations of the lens. And I think the next generation of APS-C cameras are going to start hitting this wall.

Some people still shoot 8x10 film. Crazy as it sounds. Friend of mine is in the process of finishing up a fine arts degree: they shoot 8x10 on a monthly basis.

Slide film, however, at that size, looks awesome just mounted onto white paper and framed

I think there might be some confusion here. One of the primary reason for using large format is the ability to produce large prints with minimal enlargement.

Pentax is releasing an affordable medium format camera, the 645D, in early 2010. The sensor will be even larger than full frame 35mm format cameras. With the stellar line of existing pentax 645 and 6x7 film lenses, this looks to be a great camera.
