Well, you wouldn't learn anything when we'd be doing your homework, so let's see how we can help you out without spoiling anything. First of all, what is it that you're having problems with? Have you already grabbed some black and white things, and shot them against a similarly coloured background? If not, do so, and if you have done so already show them!

hmm creativity is a part of photography - so try to be creative How about this idea: take a black person and put him/her against black background (make sure to set up lighting in a way that any details of the background are not visible). Then do the same with a white person but against white background. Then convert your pics to B&W You can also work with low-key (for black person) and high-key (for white person).

Read the notes that go with your lessons, or the notes you took in class, or whatever comes with your course. There should be something in there that will give you better guidance than a few random people on the internet guessing!

I imagine that starting by gathering a few white objects and putting them on a white background (at which point you discover that "white" is a very subjective term) would be one way to go but that certainly comes with no guarantees for the requirements of your course.

One I did back in the late '70's was to cut the crust off white bread, place it on a white poster board and shoot... This was to teach me what the f stop was all about. Great teaching tool, but back in those days I had to finish the roll, go to the dark room, etc. Much easier now!

You've got a DSLR and don't want to use it? Why? Its a much faster teaching/learning tool than film, turns days into seconds, responsive feedback, take many more shots you can throw away (important at the intro level). Guess I don't grok that choice. Film is good, learn with something faster
