What settings can i use, any other angles i can try etc??

I Use a D70+ 18-200VR + SB600(But dunno how effective it would be as we cant go very close!!)

You could use a tripod so that the photos are sharper. And I would get much closer than this ;-)

If you want more ideas, please post the EXIF information of the photos. That way we can judge the distance etc. a bit better.

Tripod deffinately would help and if you cant get closer then you could do with a zoom lense if you can borrow one preferable one with a fast f-number to help with faster shutter speeds in the dark... and then just the general things higher ISO, lower F-Stop.

If you could get in closer with a zoom or moving closer you could expose for the people and fill your frame. Do you do any kind of meetering for exposure?

Hey friends, Thanks for the replies.

I am an amateur photographer, and dont do metering etc

me and my friend have been asked to cover the function....earlier this function was pictured using P & S
so let see how it turns out using the general DSLR techniques(ISO,lower F stops etc)

Well if you feel comfortable enough... the good news is your camera has a built in light meter if you set you metering mode to spot meter, you can aim the camera at the darkest spots and subjects and get a rough ideas of the kinds of shutter speed you would have to use this can really help with exposure.

Hope all goes well.

The SB-600 won't be a lot of help at that range. How fast can you go with your 18-200mm (or do you have any faster lenses available)?

Also, what is the event and what kind of mood are you trying to convey?

its a cultural event
basically - some skits/dance/singing programs go on stage and the audience are seated (and the lights are off in the audience side). So have to go around and capture the audience with flash!!

The subjects are just too far away.
If you can get to within the action itself would be good.
That is why pro photographers are so nosey and in your face... they try to be PART of the action getting those dramatic shots.
