Default Reframing

Dear all,

i've already read a topics about reframing, but still have trouble with it.

I own a Canon EOS 50D and did the following to reframe :

1) I focus the subjest in the center of the viewer
2) press the shutter button half down
3) while shutter button pressed half down i align the subjest right in the viewer
4) press the shutter button fully down

Result:
Although everything is sharp enough, but still the center is focussed instead of my subject.

Can anyone help me out?

Try practising on a scene where your subject is much closer than the background, making it easy to evaluate what is going on. It may be that your camera is set to use multiple focus points or there might be a setting you need to use to turn focus lock on.

As a follow-up to Wulf, make sure the the Auto Focus mode is set to One-Shot - this means the focus will be locked when you hold down the shutter half-way.

If you use AI Servo, it will automatically refocus as the subject moves.

it is probably AI servo. I know I do this all the time with the (rareish) wildlife shots I do. Set to AI servo, because I want snappy focusing times, then try and reframe because I dont want grass then subject bang in the middle (rule of thirds). This, amongst other reasons, is why the more advanced cameras (read; more expensive) have loads of focus points - so you can do AI servo mode with out of centre. My camera only has 3 focus points, and AI servo only works with the centre one lol.

Default Thanks

Hi all,

thanks for your reply so far... it did help me out.
As some already said, it was the focus mode. This configuration was set to AI Servo which will keep on focussing after i pressed the shutter button halfway down.

I set it on One shot and the problem was solved...

I also looked further on this, because it isn't handy to set your focus mode to One shot to enable reframing... Once i'll forget to reset it to AI Servo and my pictures will be unclear whenever there's a lot of movements.

I've found that you can overrule some functions in a special menu...
One of the options let you define how the focus locking behaves by pressing different buttons.

Result is that i now can press the shutter button halfway down to focus, then press another button (*) while holding the shutter button to lock the focus in AI Servo mode.

Thank you all for replying

Hi,

you mentioned D60, but i think you probably mean Nikon D60?
My camera is a Canon EOS 50D.

So i think this feature could be also on D60, but possible not at the same place as i described previously.

no 'tis a CANON D60 - a older version of the 50D. Was released before FF was available and was usually used by proffessionals, due to its retail price of about $3000 new.

Canon EOS D60 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

prosumer lineup goes D30 -> D60 -> 10D -> 20D -> 30D -> 40D -> 50D

It is a common thing - people go "oh you mean the nikon" and im like"no i mean the canon" "look - C A N O N . ."

The nikon D60 is shit. Just kidding, I dont wanna start a flame war. I have no idea what the nikon D60 is like.
