If your camera has a "portrait" mode I have found even with the cheapest disposable camera if you keep the subject as far a way from the background as possible you can get reasonable blurry results.

D50 and D70 are definitely worth thinking about if you want total control of ambient lighting in flash photography-Off camera flash can be synched up to 1/4000 sec for D50; and up to 1/8000 sec for D70, as these have the same electro mechanical shutter as the D40(which can also sync up to 1/4000 sec).As far as I know, no other Nikon or other brand of camera can do this, although some flashguns have the capability to speed up.
