Default 1st Infrared attempt! Un-sucessful! HELP!

I recently brought a Hoya IR filter for my Nikon D40. Upon reading about the ways you can compose this effect I thought I would get out in the country and give this a try. The photo is not great but I'm just trying to achieve the effect at the moment and not the focus.

I have been told that once you have taken the shot you will need to take it into Photoshop and change the channels using channel mixer. I changed the red output to - R:0 G:0 B:100 and the blue output channel to R:100 G:0 B:0. Upon doing this it achieved the following results.

How can i make this look more dream like?

1) You overexposed.

2) You didn't perform a custom white balance that shifted away from the red enough when you shot.

A custom white balance will get you some colors other than red to work with. That's when the channel swapping will help you out. If you don't do the custom white balance right, you're essentially going to have an all-red photo. At that point, working in B&W may be your only choice.

You can also take a non-IR shot, and layer the two to get a different kind of false color effect.

I would say, go google up "Infrared post-processing" and see what other people are doing and how they achieve their effects. There are tons of different ways to mess with infrared.

Also, the Flickr Digital Infrared group might have some good advice.
