Default what's missing ?

While walking my dog in the woods, I noticed this guy following us along the tree line, he kept popping in and out of the brush and always stayed a couple of hundred yards away.

I kind of like the feel of this shot...I don't know why, I keep looking at it though, thinking it needs something, I just don't know what........what would you do with it ?

thanks for looking

mike

composition looks good to me. it does have allot of empty space, but thats kindof adding to the "wodland" feel of it.
a crop would ruin it i think.

i might increase contrast a tad, and experiment with a light vignette, just to bring the eye back to the middle as the edges are very light (as light as the rest of the image)

thanks for the story tho'

what's it missing? Sharpness.

Why is it not sharp? Cuz you were shooting at 300mm at 1/30 a second.

The "rule of thumb" to eliminate blurriness from handholding is to shoot at 1/focal length. So since your on a rebel, the 300mm lens is roughly 450mm. So in order to shoot at 300mm without blurriness, you'll want to shoot at least 1/450.

Thank you candleman for the suggestions, I'm not very well versed in PP but I will give your ideas a try.....it'll give me a reason to play around with the GIMP a little

crazy88ss, I think the thing I "liked" about this image is it's lack of sharpness, I was aware of the camera shake but to me ( and maybe only me ) I think the resulting image benefits from the type of blur that occurred.......I had much more light where I was previously shooting and had my ISO at 200, he kept popping out behind me where it was darker, I should have paid closer attention to that when I took the shot, you are correct in that regard..he dissapeared very quickly whenever I turned to look at him, I need to think ahead in those situations..thanks for the comment, and thanks for looking

Hi Mike,

Depending on the amount of time available, I would have tried framing him differently - placing him to the right of the frame, taking vertical shots etc, just to create more options to choose from.

However, I like the current framing, it works for me.

I like your thoughts as to why you like it.

The blur makes me feel woosy however i think if you can blow it ou with curves etc you could get a great shot that looks like a snowy scene of a dog!

The shot looks dreamy to me. The unfocussed branches in the front enhances the dream like sequence.

the original has him pretty much in the middle, which I actually liked,
tag along
I cropped it like I did to try and follow some of the "rules" of composition, I thought it might help.

Hi mfreg, I'm new to the forum but I had to comment! I just recently read an article in a photography magazine in which there was a pic almost identical to yours. The professional photographer who took it got it accedentally when trying to turn off his camera. The comment that he made about the pic was that he kept coming back to it so he kept it. I love your pic. More than likely if you keep coming back to it someone else will too. I would do what candleman says and tweek the contrast a bit but I like the original photo better.
