Default fire

this shot is SOOC with the exception of a slight crop on one edge to remove some overexposed stuff. i like it as is, but was fooling around with the flip/rotate tools. which do you like better?

original:
bonfire

flipped:
fire flipped

as soon as i learn how to "clone" i'm going to take out whatever that is along the other edge....

I'm trying to learn GIMP, but it's slow going. I like to learn things by just fooling around with them, but that's proved to be virtually impossible with that program. I am trying to get through the user's guide but there's so much (in the way of terms and techniques) that's new to me, it's hard to understand. they should market photo programs with a little fairy that sits on your shoulder and tells you what to do.

http://www.amazon.com/Beginning-GIMP...0405932&sr=8-1

another one for GIMP but i'm not sure how good it is

there are a few people on the DPS forums that use GIMP (wulf comes to mind) and they're more than happy to give you a hand. all you have to do is ask.

oh, i'm clueless when it comes to GIMP. i haven't used it in forever. i use psp x2 but have GIMP on my puter when i want to tinker hehe

I like both. I like the patterns of the red on black. Pretty cool. It depends on what kind of statement you are trying to make. The sideways one reminds me of a vid I made for my friends ambient music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OuQBKpOdF0k

Cloning isn't necessary on a black background like the one you have. Just sample the black and paint over it. Or copy and paste a piece of black over it. That's what I'd do anyways.

That is a beautiful shot, both aesthetically and technically. Well done indeed.

As Oldwolf said there are a few of us here that cant afford Photo$haft and use GIMP. If you need help you only have to ask.

The first one is my favorite.

I've been slowly plugging away at Gimp also, and understand your frustration. I found this site quite useful:

So far, the best one of the links is Gimp's own:

Good Luck!

mmmmm....toasty socks.

Thanks everyone for the links to the GIMP tutorials! i did figure out how to cover up that flaw on the side, but haven't posted the fixed one to my flickr yet. it's good to know that i'm not the only one having trouble trying to learn that stuff. hopefully i'll have some time on my hands soon to look at those tutorials. so much to learn!!
