Don't get too tangled up with rules or you will become so obsessed with technique that you won't be making images.

Simple way: Ask yourself 3 questions:

1. What is my main subject?

2. How can I emphasise my main subject?

3. What can I leave out of the image?

Regards, Ken

Great advice! Sums up everything once you've nailed down the basics...

off the cuff, these are very good rules to live by. for me as a novice, 1 is pretty straight forward - it's the thing that caught my eye, made me pick up the camera, 2 is where some of the techniques or rules would really be handy to keep in the back of my head and 3 is probably the most forgotten step of all but as important as 1.

I do whole heartedly agree with your first point, just shoot the pictures. review and reshoot if possible. it's the only way to learn and grow.

First you need to know the diameterof the"circle of confusion" for your lens- I imagine this to be around.006mm. To explain hyperfocal distance: if your lens is set to shortest focal length- 7mm,using an F-stop of F4 (equivalent to F11 in dslr DX/FX terms) and is focused at 2.2 metres, all will be acceptably sharp from 1.1 meters to as far as you can see.
Depth of field is better explained as:
Depth of actual focus is 1/3 in front of focused subject, and 2/3ds behind.(Approximately)
