Default soft or sharp?

hi!!!

have recently started taking pics using a point and shoot cam with basic manual fxns, these are from one i took while on break at the university grounds (almost sunk in mud, didnt know water was underneath all those grass,lol); one i edited with good old ms pic manager, the other my first picasa edit

do tell which has a better over all look and feel. all comments and suggestions are welcome

I like the second one better. The reddish butterfly (or a flower, not sure exactly what it is) stands out more and makes a bit of contrast with greens. You should try to isolate and emphasise the subject, by moving in/zooming in closer.

I agree with milosh. Also, your first shot seems to be over-saturated (too bright and colorful).

I also like the 2nd shot the best. I don't mind the coloring of the 1st one, but it seems blurry to me. The 2nd one is more clear and detailed. I do agree with the idea of cropping the photo as the previous poster mentioned.
