Default Driving me crazy

Another photo of a robin from the island sanctuary. I can't decide which profile I like but I'm leaning towards the landscape one even though all that I've learnt tells me it should be the portrait shot. Which would you choose & why? Also is there anything at all that you would change or alter in the picture, I will be putting one of these forward for the exhibition I've been going on about for so long! I tell you I'll be glad when I can close the door on this "little" assignment!

I like the landscape. Vertical feels cramped to me.

The landscape is better for me as well. But the cramped feeling comes from his/her looking out of the edge that is closest to him/her. It also is a bit soft in focus.

I like the landscape orientation one (the second one).
Like Rentham said, the vertical one feels a little cramped. If you absolutely love the vertical one though, leave more space on the right side instead of the left side. This rule is called 'giving your subject room to look into'. It really helps you imagine what he's looking at easier when you can see some of the space that he's looking into.
See what I mean?

But I still like the landscape one much better. That orientation just seems to suit the picture better, to me at least.

Thank you all very much, the landscape one it is! It's the one I like the best too. I like the way he's standing on the tree root. He's waiting for me to stir up the leaf litter, payment for posing

While I have learnt about cropping so the subject is looking onto the picture I thought that although his head is turned to the right, his eye is looking to the left of shot hence the crop! I guess I got that wrong

I would have made the same 'mistake'; I thought he was looking at the leaves there to the left of him...too much time watching the chickens, I guess! LOL!

Glad you got it sorted - really cute little bird though :-) On one of our tramps last year in the Bay (to Bellbird Bush I think) we saw a grey robin, who just sat for ages while we all tried to get photos. Nice to see photos of our native birds - thanks.
