Default Shutter snap

Is the Canon S95 capable of a full press snap rather than half hold then press? If so, can that be set in custom mode?

Im not entirely sure what youre asking.

When you press the shutter half way, you allow the camera to focus on the subject (based on the AF mode you've chosen in your menu). You then take a picture by continuing to press the shutter down,

If you press the shutter all the way down without waiting, the camera wont focus: it'll take a picture.

This is a quote in the features of the Ricoh GR DIGITAL III camera at Amazon
Quote
"Full Press Snap to grab that shutter chance
With this quick-shooting function, AF operates when the shutter release button is pressed half way, but for a one-push full-press, the photo is taken at a set focal distance. (1m/2.5m/5m/8). This distance setting can be easily changed. Since the AF does not operate for a one-push full press, you will not miss the moment.

Don't let that shutter chance get away: Pre-AF function
Even if the shutter release button is not pressed half way, focusing follows the subject’s movement. The pre-AF action accelerates focusing time."

End quote

So, can the S95 setup in C mode with aperture, speed and pre-focused for a distance?

On page 90 of the users manual is a section titled "shooting with the AF lock". I am wondering if this is the same thing as the Ricoh blurb? So, after setting the AF lock can you press the shutter button down without doing the halfway push? Am I reading this right?

No, this isnt the same. What the Ricoh system is explaining is similar to what we would call "trap focus". You manually set the camera to a particular focal distance, and so you skip the need to focus. the S95 does NOT have this function. It's a little useless, frankly: if you need shutter response, get an SLR.

As for "focus lock", that's for when you've pressed the shutter half way and achieved focus, you can set the camera to either continue to automatically adjust focus as you move or to hold focus as you move. "locked" is usually for a held (locked) focus.

I have a SLR, the question is about the S 95.
So, your saying that when the camera is in full manual mode, with everything set up, aperture, time and pre-focused and saved to C, you can not just press the shutter button down without stopping half way?

I know you can not have two modes at once. Can it be either/or?

If youve got the camera set to manual focus and you've prefocused, then you just take the picture. You can ALWAYS just press the shutter button all the way down; the camera just wont focus. THe Ricoh, in the mode you've specified, doesnt focus either.
