Default Canon and Tamron Lenses

I have a Canon 20d and purchased a Tamron 17-50 vc lens a couple months ago. I just found out that if I upgrade to the 7d, I cannot use this lens on my 20d. I had no idea, so how do you know this? My sister-in-law has a 5d and when she put this lens on her camera, it caused a black ring around the picture. Tamron also confirmed this.

It will work on a 7d but not on a 5d because the 5d is full frame and the 7d is not.

The lens designation specifies what bodies it can be used on.

a) All the 3rd party manufacturers don't do the idiot-bumper, and just use the EOS mount, so all their crop body lenses will mount on the full-frames, unlike Canon's EF-S lenses.

b) Not all crop body lenses have elements that go past the mount flange. And typically the mirror doesn't break when it whacks into the back of a lens. At least, not the first few times. Repeated mirror hangs can cause damage, but it's on a spring that seems to absorb most of the shock if it does hit the back of a lens.

People have reported that they can use lenses like the Tokina 11-16 without any issues (other than vignetting below 15mm) on a 5D.

+1

It will work on the 7D. For some reason Canon made the 7D a crop sensor while keeping the xD naming convention.

Slight correction: "Di II" is the Tamron crop-body designation. Di simply means it's got coatings that will help reduce internal reflections with digital, but it can still be used on both full-frame and crops. Similar to the Sigma DG designation.

Crop body-only designations are (from the WIkipedia APS-C page):
  • Canon EF-S
  • Nikon DX format
  • Pentax DA
  • Konica Minolta DT
  • Sony DT
  • Sigma DC
  • Tamron Di II
  • Tokina DX
