ressalg, be my guest. I'd like to see what you're thinking.

lezleelliott, thank you for a) that beautiful edit and b) telling me what you did.

Cuchulainn, how did you brighten the teeth and eyes?

I honestly did not expect this much help and I am so thankful for everyone's input.

There are a few different ways to do it. Here is a tutorial that shows a couple of them...

This goes on to show the next part of this.. which is a 3rd method using curves..

So, all I did was created two duplicate layers of the picture. The top layer was desaturated to give it the black and white look. The layer just beneath the desaturated one was left alone. With the desaturated layer selected, I used the eraser tool on her face only. Then, I merged all the layers and used the Noise Ninja filter on the picture. I actually went a little over the top with the Noise Ninja as I personally liked the kind of china-doll look it gave her.

thanks, Cuchulainn. I bookmarked it for future reference.

as for you, ressalg... I'm not a big fan of the 'china doll' appearance but I can see how other people might like it. thanks for teaching me how to accomplish it.
