Default Flute Headjoint

Hey people, first post on the forum.

Here's my newb-take of a rose gold flute head-joint on a bed of scores. Took this the day I got my new 400D.

Canon EOS 400D (Rebel XTi) Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L lens
ISO 400
f/4
1/5

Lights were a tad bit dim. I understand that my composition can be improved (rule of thirds, black spots at the top etc)

I'd appreciate any crits you guys have about this composition (:

Weclome Headshotz! Nice subjects and idea for a shot. I think this is a nice shot and the flutes surface reflecting the music is a nice touch. I personally would play around with DOF and increase it just a bit making sure the whole length of the flute is in focus. You would still be able to get the notes in the forground in focus while leaving a bit of blur to the background and extreme forground. Maybe try playing around with the angle a bit too so as not to lose the tip of the flute. I think its a good chance to play around with the camera and subject getting different looks with the same subject. Do you have any type of lighting.....even a desk lamp or flashlight can add a bit of light and change a photo entirely.
Again welcome to the forums and enjoy!

Don't forget the details. For example, take note of what is reflected in the flute. It is beautifully shiny but there doesn't seem any particular importance to the music reflected in it.

Of course, there doesn't have to be but these things are worth thinking about.

As you learn more about your camera, this scene is one you can come back to several times.

Thanks for the welcome and crits pinball!

I'm currently planning on getting that home-made light tent set up, so the light wouldn't be an issue next time. I'll take note about the DOF and angles the next time round!

Thanks again, and I hope to be an active member of this site (:

I really like this photo.

The DOF is nice, I love the reflection of the music sheet on the flute, that really sealed the deal for me.

Rules are fun and all...but they are meant to be broken...photography is art..it can break all the rules if it wants!!!

Good job
