You don't have to upload your pictures via Flickr. You have quite a few options for how to post pictures (Flickr, Picasa, Zooomr, Photobucket, Imageshack, an attachment).

Flickr is one of the easiest ways. What you would do is upload your pictures to Flickr, and once they are there, follow the directions in this post to put a link to your picture into your own post. Umm, hopefully that made sense (and I didn't get your question totally wrong)

Thanks, Nicole. I'll just upload them to my web site server and then use the URL

Yep, that's perfectly fine, just keep the 600px on the longest side rule in mind And feel free to link to a larger size on your server if you want

Default modified images?

How are you guys posting modified images, i.e. if you download a 'critique my shot' picture, change something to illustrate your point, and then repost? I don't want to necessarily host it on my Flickr site and risk someone seeing it there and thinking it's my own work. If I set it to "private" on Flickr, will it still show up if i embed an HTML link here? or do the security settings still apply?

Just curious to know what others do in this situation.

thanks!

That's precisely what I do actually. I post the picture to my Flickr site as private, and then post the embedded HTML. If I want to give people on the forums access to a larger version, I copy the static link to the large / original and place that as a separate link to click on.

So, short answer to your question, yes, private images do show up as long as you use the method posted here. If you just place a normal link to a photo (e.g. a text link) the page will show as private and nobody has access.

I generally reserve my Flickr site for my shots (although you will find some tagged notbyme, which are generally ones taken by my wife); for reworking other people's images, I rely on attaching my version to the post, accepting the smaller preview size.

It is a little bit quicker and, since I don't plan on reusing that work (it is only for practise or to illustrate a point) neater from my point of view.

YMMV.
