Assignment: Breaking the Rules
This one is over exposed, cropped at some joints, too much dead space.

It still works, Yoashnish. The fingers (if we don't consider them a detail part of the composition ... ignore the cutoffs) direct the viewer's eyes to the red leaf. The green on the left side breaks the white and eases the eyes. It also helps frame the focal point which is the red leaf. The red leaf stands out against the white in total contrast. This is a good artsy photo. I can imagine it blown up and wall mounted in a "modern" appointed apartment.

assignment|breakingrules
OK, so I think that some people are gunna go... um "what rules did he break"... Thirds - the section of third where there is something in the photo is underexposed (lens) the only sharp part of focus is my arm...(dead centre) Simplicity - main subject is close to the lens so make the background simple... I have a basin with laundry in it, in mine... and a textured door... The contrast rule directs that light subjects should be placed against dark backgrounds and vice versa...is this why I have a white door behind my white'ish body? ![]() Another personal rule I have broken - Don't try and copy Susan!!.. (sorry Susan!)

Headless chicks' day out at the pool
I love framing portraits unconventionally. I've got a real thing for half a face, or half a body - to me, taking away actually adds more to the photo, somehow it makes the photo more intense. When you include the whole face, everything is laid bare for the viewer to see, when you conceal a key part of the subject then it raises questions in the viewer's mind - who is this person, what are they thinking, what do they really look like. So, with a mandate to break rules and the sun beating down, I set out to the swimming pool in Madrid with my friend. I was discreetly taking our portrait with a man-sized reflector and tripod in tow (ok, ok, maybe not so subtle, but I needed to pump as much of the sunshine into the photo as possible because I wanted it to look blown in parts to show that summer does exist in some parts of the world - a concept that is hard to understand if you have spent winter, sorry I mean summer in the UK this year) when the pool security guards came up to us and told us we were breaking the pool rules and that photos were 'prohibido' and that we had to stop and delete those we'd taken. Choosing not to understand entirely we smiled and packed away and I quickly removed the camera battery so that they couldn't enforce deletion! Then we went on our merry little way for a swim knowing that I had the shot I wanted and feeling very happy to have broken rules both photographically and even better, in real life too. You see, ever since I was little (no sizest jokes please from my taller antipodean friends) I've always enjoyed getting told off - so my sincere thanks to the pool security guards for making my day with a right royal telling off and for making my assignment complete. All that was left to do was break the rules of the dance floor until the early hours...

You rule breaker you! I like this even though I was quite disturbed at first thinking that the washbasin was your legs! I can vouch to those who don't know you that you aren't that strangely shaped in real life! But it's a really striking shot and the lighting and contrast are cool. And I guess I can forgive copying (in all honesty not sure in what way you are copying but hey it's worth me keeping it as a bargaining tool) as long as you promise to be my 24hr computer and gadget and all-things-technical support line for ever more...deal?
