Default Panning

As a result of numerous requests I'm closing down and moving the Panning Assignment from the Flickr Group here.

I've written tips on the technique of Panning previously on the DPS Blog if you want a few hints on how to do it. Once you've read it - get into practicing the technique and post your experiments and any previous panning shots you've taken below.

Panning - I find this technique rather difficult to get right!

Ok, so the following picture isn't anything spectacular composition wise, or photographic wise for that matter. But it's my greatest attempt at panning to date. This was the 20th shot, fnially I got it right (then the ride ended!). It's a picture at a fair of my little brother Champion he is!

I got this on my third attempt while practicing on passing vehicles. I also got a hard look from the driver which made me wonder if it was such a good idea to be taking pics of an armored truck.

The lighting sucked, so it's a bit grainy since I shot it at ISO 800, but watching "the herding of cats" at my nephew's basketball game is a great way to practice.

Default Rolex Cadillac

CaddyALS car at VIR

I had to take several pan shots to get this final photo to find the correct shutter speed so that the wheels on the car showed motion and also to show that I was panning. The first few shots, the wheels appeared motionless as if the car was sitting still. This was taken with my Nikon 990 Coolpix, not the 30D.

Truly don't know how I managed to capture this shot of my cat jumping from table to island, but I did. It's an old shot and there's been some post processing (watercolour filter was applied)... still a neat shot in my opinion:

One of my few attempts at this. Poor kid was out of breath by the time I let him quit running across the yard...
