Go as wide as you can on your lens - the assignment is to learn by taking an extreme setting and using it to make a great photo. Many of you will have a range of lenses, therefore letting you pick different focal lengths with smaller apertures but, if you want to stretch yourself then choose the widest one you've got.

I've been away on holiday for a few days and didn't take my widest lens (50mm f/1.8). However, I found a need for f/2.5 on my Vivitar lens on Tuesday evening, trying to catch a picture of some bullocks in the twilight:

Bullocks - 1

I think this could be improved with further lightening in the digital darkroom (although c. 400 pictures queued up for attention means I probably won't get round to it!) but at least the wide open setting gives me enough detail to make that feasible.

Camera: Nikon D40
Exposure: 1/25s
Aperture: f/2.5
Focal Length: 90mm
ISO Speed: 200

i was in a company summer party and they had fun and games and stuff. one of the parlor games they had was the longest line. after they took off their shirts and socks and slippers and stuff, i dropped down onto my bum, crouched, and took this shot. this all happened in less than a second - a feat for a 240-pound guy like me ^_^

OT: if you can noticed the "bokehed" pieces of clothing on the upper right third, that's part of the line. they took off shoelaces, belts, an underwire lingerie (and don't you put on a smug look now... ) and even ripped one of their shirts just to extend the line. now that's what i call competetive! ^O^

Default Assignment: Wide Open

The following shot was taken while at my first fishing trip of the year, which was pretty much uneventful on May 4th, 2008. This is also my first post to this contest and I'm also a Newbie to the site and photo world.

Oh I must say this is a picture of the razor sharp teeth of our Notorious Bluefish of the eastern coast of the US.

ISO: 80
Exposure: 1/60 sec
Aperture: f/2.8 -max aperture on a G9
Focal Length: 7.4mm
Flash Used: Yes

Curious

EXIF on flickr.
Aperture: F/2.8, this is the largest opening of my little point & shoot, but I'm proud of my camera .

Not a stupid question at all.. one we get fairly often actually.. The easiest thing to do is to upload the picture using flickr (see instructions here) where they will nicely preserve your EXIF data presuming you haven't lost it before the upload. There is also a thread here about how to make sure to preserve said EXIF data.

Also, make sure that if you are submitting the photo to the mini-contest that it has Assignment: Wide Open somewhere in the post (subject or top of post works best), as well as the EXIF data. Without this information the image is immediately disqualified.
