Hi,
I am using a 30D camera and two lenses:
Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM
Sigma 70-300mm F/4-5.6 APO DG
My pictures taken with the Canon lens are significantly superior in clarity and details.
I am looking to replace the Sigma lens with a new one, and looking for recommendations for which lens I should buy.

My main use for this lens is surfing photography, and birds. But I am also planning a trip to Australia where I am assuming I will be using it for additional photography.
I am also looking to extend to zoom so I would probably be looking for a lens up to 400 MM and maybe more.

Any suggestions?
Erez.

I guess it depends on how much you want to spend and if you want to stick with Canon. The Canon 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS is generally highly rated and costs around $1350.00. Longer length generally gets more expensive. Check these reviews http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=19&sort=7&cat=27&page=1

I replaced my Sigma 70-300mm F/4-5.6 APO DG with the Canon 70-200 F2.8L USM. I was unhappy with the unsharp images from the Sigma. And that Canon is a great lens! I really love it. And because of the F2.8 you can use an extender to get longer length. Maybe not enough for surfing and birds. But my advice is if you need detail go for a Canon L lens.
