View Full Version : D50 & D70 Shutter Life

The life of an SLR is usually pretty closely tied to its shutter life. Nikon doesn't like to put a number on it, but I wanted to figure out about how many shots my D50 is good for.

After an exhaustive amount of research, I found two popular estimates: 15-20K shots, or 50K shots, and I lean towards the latter. The shutter will last longer if you don't use burst mode. If you're taking shots above about 1/1000 of a second, I believe that the camera uses a digital shutter and not the mechanical, which means the image won't be quite as clear, but your shutter won't get worn down.

All of my research was geared toward the D50, but the popular theory is that both the D50 and D70 have a similar shutter (if not the same mechanism) that lasts about the same time. I'm not sure exactly what happens when the shutter goes, but I believe that the shutter speed starts to become unreliable—I don't think it just stops working. The cost of replacing the shutter is enough that most people just lay their old camera to rest and buy a new one.

All of the information here was gleaned from forums and boards that I found around the web, so this probably isn't 100% accurate.

I'm up to 20,400 shots, so I'm guessing that the cameras last for about 50,000 shots. There's one guy (or so I've heard) whose D70 lasted for 150,000 shots.

Has anybody else had experience with this?

Those are the same sort of estimates I've seen for the d50 elsewhere, but I really hope that the reality is that it's towards the upper end of those estimates, otherwise I'll be lucky if my camera lasts another year...

I think that's it. http://digital-photography-school.com/forum/showthread.php?t=196&highlight=camera+actuations

As long as you've taken under 9999 pictures, the file name will probably be about right... but read the thread that saralonde linked to... there are programs mentioned there that help you extract the actuation count from your exif data. If that doesn't work, we'll figure out! :)

yeah, I'm in the same boat as you. Up to 20,400, and I've only had mine since last April. I'm hoping that if it goes, it goes within the first year so I can try to fix it under warranty. If that doesn't work, then darn... guess I have to get that D80!!

Check with Nikon to see how much it would cost to replace the shutter. I use a Canon 30D, which Canon states is good for 100k pics, but was curious and asked, if it had to be replaced, what would the cost be? I was told $145.00.
This seems reasonable to me compared to the cost of a new camera. If you do have a problem, it may be worth looking into. I does not hurt to ask, you maybe surprised.

very true! I haven't checked to see what the cost to replace is, because it's not an issue for me yet. I'm hoping to upgrade bodies before my current one wears out, though. :)
