This image was created using the Canon 100mm macro, extension tube, and the Nikkor 50mm 1.4 lens attached in reverse.
I put this dragonfly wing on a old lightbox, which helped to illuminate and somewhat enhance the details found within the wing.
I also used a tripod and macro slider, which is a must for this type of shot.
For macro work, and to add something a bit different to your bag of tricks, try a lightbox.
They are very affordable, and can be found in some places for about $12 and up.
The one I am using now only ran me about $23.

Michael Brown,

Like a slide on a good microscope, outstanding. Stained glass in sepia.

this one was always one of my fav images of yours..... and last week i went looking on eBay for some light boxes.. or instructions on how to build one...
on eBay right now the small ones 5*7 are going for abt $23 as you said.. i think i would like a bigger one as it would help with some of my lighting in my light tent... so i may end up having to do a DIY build .. :)

using the Canon 100mm macro, extension tube, and the Nikkor 50mm 1.4 lens attached in reverse.

Can someone draw me a picture of that? Maybe it is my basic knowledge of English that is not sufficient, but do you have a canon lens and you attach a nikkor lens to it backwards?

mmm... not tryint ot hijack this topi..well maybe..:D

Great shot!! I want a lightbox now too..
