This week we once again celebrate the life of a fallen rock star. December 10, 2007 marks the 40th anniversary of the death of one of popular music’s most influential icons, Otis Redding. Named #21 on Rolling Stone’s “100 Greatest Artists of All Time” list, Redding emerged onto the music scene in the early ‘60s, quickly establishing himself as a superstar artist and savvy businessman. His string of timeless hits includes, “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long,” “Satisfaction,” “Try A Little Tenderness,” and “Respect.” “Respect,” which Redding wrote in 1965, was a Top 10 hit for him and later became a #1 smash for Aretha Franklin.

He was only 26 years old when his own twin engine Beechcraft went down in the icy waters of Lake Monona(Madison,Wisconsin) taking his life together with his pilot and four members of The Bar-Kays, who were Redding’s touring band. The only survivor, Ben Cauley, was a member of the Bar-Kays. Redding had released numerous hit albums and singles prior to his death and “(Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay,” released posthumously, became his 17th straight hit, first million seller and one of his most popular songs.
Otis had just finished recording "The Dock of the Bay" 4 days prior to his death. They rushed the recording of the song because he had to start his tour to promote the album. The whistling you hear at the end of the song wasn't meant to be kept in the song. It was just put in as a filler & he was going to record more lyrics to be added at a later date. Madison was just the 2nd stop on his promotional tour.

I do believe I'll listen to the Everclear song in honour of Otis Reading ;) Aptly called Otis Reading.

I wish I could sing like Otis Redding
I wish I could play this guitar in tune

Nice pun! I love the opportunity these threads present to look at songs from different angles.

Sittin' in the mornin' sun
I'll be sittin' when the evenin' come
Watching the ships roll in
And then I watch 'em roll away again.

I took this while sitting in the morning sun on Easter 2007.

WooD,

For having no previous modeling experience, she took direction well. She also thinks she's too good.

Do we believe in the magnifying loupe yet?

I have to use a loupe / linen tester at work every day. I have several really good ones too, but using one at home wood make me think of work. On my off days that's the last thing I wanna think about. How about a big round hand held magnifying glass?

That really is a once in a lifetime shot. I love it.

WooD,

Glad it works for you. Sometimes I find dazed and confused creatures which, when picked up on a stem, will hold still for several moments as I rotate them into good Sun.

Anything that magnifies should work. There is a great children's electronic toy that simulates a microscope; better quality with more expense, as usual. Discovering a way is half the fun.

This was taken at Little Rock Central High School, these are photos of the Little Rock Nine...... In 1957 they change segregation laws around the country.

mfhurst; Nice!!! With the story behind that showcase, that's a perfect title for that shot. Nice job everyone! I think the next one will be a little tougher. Hint: I was inspired by a shot I saw on these very forums!! Are you all up to the task?:D

leafyfingers,

Maternal eye catches the nuance, and a wonderful shot. It reminded me of long-ago "catch the Cheerios" breakfasts (before those laws were passed).
