Hi,

I'm not sure this is exactly the right forum for this, but I have a question to put to fellow members.

I've been using Flickr for a few years and had a Pro account for a year. After it ran out, I sorely missed the features I used to have with a Pro account. However, I pay for web hosting anyway, so I figured I might try to set up a gallery in my own space.

I looked at all the solutions, but it was ZenPhoto (www.zenphoto.org) that I liked the most. I implemented a gallery and did a custom design to match my site, integrating EXIF data and LightBox2. It can be seen here:

However, while I enjoy having my photos on my server under my control, I lament the fact that I don't have access to the social groups Flickr has to offer.

This is a long way of asking my question: does anyone use a dual system of uploading say their best shots to Flickr for communities and such, and have another space to upload a greater number of images? If anyone works off this model, I'd be curious to hear how it works and if you've encountered any problems.

Thanks,
Tyson

i do.. use both my website and flickr.. also i upload to DeviantArt.. tho i dont use zenPhoto i have in past but i do use pixelpost more suited to my blogging one photo a day...i find it extremely amusing that all 3 communities view a photo differently ... eg on DA i may get over well over 60 faves... and on flickr for same image.. only 3...

as for problems.. no i dont think sooo...

Just buy another flickrpro account. Now that the pro accounts come with unlimited space and unlimited bandwidth you'll have plenty of space for pics! :D

Personally, I use flickr for 'storage' and social purposes and put my best photos on my photoblog (http://www.stolenfocus.com)

For years I've had my own website but I found publishing my pictures was always a bit of a chore, even though I'm a professional webmaster so it is not that I don't understand the ins and outs of web-publishing.

I was very impressed with Flickr using the free account and decided that the range of features they were offering (for example, tagging photos for easy future retrieval, publishing once and having a range of image sizes available, etc) were worth $25 a year - it would cost far more than that in terms of my time even to reproduce the subset that I particularly use of what I think Flickr does right.

I would rather pay a little bit each year and get the full range of benefits (rather than fit within the restrictions of the free account) as, all in all, I think it works out to a pretty good deal.

Thanks all for your comments.

It seems a Flickr Pro account is again the answer, whether or not it is used in conjunction with my own personal hosting.

Thanks again,
Tyson
