I shot these berries with the camera in macro mode with two differant lens. The first was shot with a 14-45mm lens with a focal length of 45, and the second was shot with a 50-200mm with a focal length of 200. Both were heavily cropped, but both seem to maintain sharpness and have very little distortion. I do not have a fixed focal length macro lens. Which lens would be better to use for macro shots, until I can get a macro lens, or does it matter?

This picture makes me hungry, haha. I like the second picture a lot more, it is so nicely centered. Sorry, can't help you out in the which lens section. I don't have a macro either. :(

Thanks for the reply. I have about decided that it does not make any differance which one I use, as long as I get the results I want. Just have fun! By the way, those berries were very small, about the size of a pea.

Until you decide to go for a dedicated macro, you might be able to use some of the wonderful diopters that you can simply screw on to the front of your lens.
I am sure that you could use one of the Canon diopters, ... the 250D or the 500D, and it can give you some very nice results. I often use them when a client is looking for a particular shot or certain feel to a image, while the depth is limited.

Here is an example image using the Canon 500D on a 75-300mm zoom.

Hope this helps a bit! :)
