Another week of what would you do is upon us ;)

This week, we have a picture from Teinee for you to work your editing magic on:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2315/1895382035_4929e3f787.jpg

Available Larger (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2315/1895382035_4929e3f787_b.jpg)

The rules are simple, should you choose to accept the challenge. Use the photo, edit it, come back and show us what you have done, and finally, give us an explanation of how you did it so that the rest of us can learn from it.

If you want your picture used in one of these threads, please drop me a PM with a link to the medium and large size of the picture. I'm always looking for pictures, so if you have something that you think could use a bit of fixing, why not let the DPS community have a try at it.

Now, let's see what you would do!

This was tough because it is all ready a very colorful picture but had a hard time with the flower int he front being out of focus so I tried numerous attempts before i came up with this one.
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/alockintime/2050324558/" title="1 by windrider86, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2102/2050324558_2d5ea6ddcd.jpg" width="240" height="333" alt="1" /></a>

Cropped image, Duplicated later, Mulitply and lowered opacity, Adjustment layer - brought up the satuation in the green, Mirrored image, selective sharpening & selective softening, used weave effect, highpas sharpen, boosted colros one more time and then merged all layers.

GOAL: Since there was so much color in this photo I thought I would try to single out the leaf via selective color.

What I did (in Paint Shop Pro XI):
-Crop
-Duplicated layer
-Desaturated and colorized sepia (15)
-Erased leaf on duplicated layer
-Unsharp mask (35) on sepia layer
-Adjusted histogram midtones (-13) on sepia layer
-Unsharp mask (20) on color layer
-Merged layers
-Cloned a little around the flower petal edges to better blend into the leaf
-Added borders

windrider86,

Once a week I see a new technique I can't possibly replicate. Weave effect is a winner. Well done.

Teewinot,

Less is more. Way to see through the crowd, and accent the 'character.' Well done.

I wanted to try the magic mirror & came up with this <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/rightleftbroken/PrettyPlate/photo?authkey=wCGXpIzBHt4#5135023818418325666"><img src="http://lh6.google.com/rightleftbroken/R0NE9NH-iKI/AAAAAAAAFBM/BimQFywur-I/s400/1895382035_4929e3f787.jpg" /></a> I think it looks like a pretty hand painted plate .:)

Duplicated the background layer three times; added gaussian blur to the middle copy and set the highlight levels of the top copy to about 200. Set the mode of the levels adjusted layer to screen and lowered the opacity of the blur and levels layers. Merged all the layers except for the original background and duplicated the new merged layer twice. Added a GIMPressionist filter to the top layer, using changing the paper and brush, changing size, orientation, increased the number of directions, and kept the original background. Changed the opacity of the GIMPressionist layer and the other merged layer, and then merged all the layers.

Here's an Out of Bounds (http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&ct=res&cd=1&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.worth1000.com%2Ftutorial.asp% 3Fsid%3D161043&ei=h4dER8PYAYiGpATxzPG3Cw&usg=AFQjCNHKFKrgTHDKEy7GAnU-Nf2a5KKyYQ&sig2=5M-21cxswKwkZDpl2Ydi3g) type one.

The out of bounds idea works really well for this. The original suffers from the lack of a clear focal point. Ideas like selective colour help pick something out but OOB is also a solid approach.

Looking good this week :) And I didn't even realise until today that the whole picture is kind of autumn-y and thanksgiving-ish ;) Looking forward to seeing more edits!

I really like the results that I see here, it is showing me so many options for these shots (there were more). When I stepped outside and saw the leaf match, I know what I was looking to capture, and what I did NOT see when I looked at the results. I started to delete them because I knew they did not have what I was looking for, now I am going to play with them...and think really outside the box. And yup, fall leaf in a planter of fall mums, that did work out well, didn't it. :)

Hi, I'm new around here and it's my first time to post. I'm still familiarizing, so kindly let me know if I'm committing any infraction or breaking any rules.

The image already works for me. I love the interplay of the reds and yellows. What I would like to do is introduce some imbalance in the contrasts and evenness of colors, so that the eye of the viewer will be drawn to the yellow leaf at the center.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/13760913@N02/2058894405/" title="DPS-boost by Silent Waters, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2256/2058894405_4c2f063442.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="DPS-boost" /></a>

What I did:
- added a dark vignette around the image
- slightly boosted the colors
- significantly increased contrast

again at a loss for ideas but happy for the opportunity....

polar coordinates....several layers of the same oval selection.....each smaller than the one before and each rotated 180 degrees....a gradient adjustment layer of yellow (center) and magenta (outer)....

i thought it kinda looked like a basket or a nest....

thanks again

I don't remember what I did...
I know there is some motion blur here....
alittle bit of saturation removal...
a pinch of isolating the flowers with the magic wand...
cutting and cloning
and creation of the floating leaf using bits and pieces of the main leaf

I will try and remember what I did :)

Changed the color contrast by selecting the background image and gave a bit of a Gaussian blurr
Applied 'Glowing Edges' Filter
and then selected the leaf and added "Ink Outlines" fliter after changing the contrast

I sometimes like the soft and dreamy look on these. A little over-done but quick and dirty.

Auto Levels
Lasso a circle around the focus flower at 150 feather.
Brighten and increase contrast.
Invert selection and lower brightness and increase contrast a little.
Paint a dark frame around the edge with a large darken brush.
Duplicate the layer twice and Gaussian Blur each at 8.5.
Set one to Overlay the other to Screen, both with roughly 30% Opacity
Flatten and soften a little more with another layer copy, Guassian blurred and set to 44% Opacity.(Bump this down for less over-doneness)

I think there have been some really creative edits on this picture :) It's really interesting to see so many different views of a single picture!
