Hi guys !

My first post here. I'm Komal and i'm a photography enthuisast. U can say i'm somewhere between a plain point n shoot user and an amatuer photographer. The saddest part of my story is that i've been practising with my friends' cams. It's time that i got my own cam.

I had to save up some money and am still saving up more. Converted to US currency, cams in the range of 200-300 $ would be affordable to me.

I've learnt a lot about digital photography from DPS and am more than eager to try them out. I am doing my research on which cam's best for me.
I've considered Sony Cybershot's DSC 500 , DSC 600 and DSC W30... all 6 megapixel cams but they dont offer almost any manual settings for shutter speed or ISO or anything.

The only non DSLR cam in this range I saw was Canon Powershot A540. It's 6 megapixel and has some manual settings in the aperture and shutter speed and i'm not so sure about ISO.

How good is A540 and is there any better other point n shoot cam in that price range that offers manual controls ? Please do help me out :)

Thank you,

Komal Kanth

I'm not familiar with cameras in this range, but from some research I did, the A540 seems like a good camera. The reviews are good and I think you can set ISO as well as aperture and shutter speed. There may be someone on this forum that uses this camera and they may be able to give you firsthand knowledge. Let us know what you decide.

You might also want to take a look at the Canon A630. It's in the $200-$300 US range, and has higher resolution and more features than the A540. It also has a full-manual mode, and a flip-out screen.

One of the best ways to get ideas of what a camera is capable of, is to do a search on Flickr for images from that model of camera. Here's the Flickr page for the A540 (http://www.flickr.com/cameras/canon/powershot_a540/). Samples galore. Another good resource for information on digicams is the dpreview website (http://www.dpreview.com).
