View Full Version : Nikon D40: Can you customize the auto focus points?

I was once again at the store testing out the D40 and was getting very frustrated that the right or left auto focus points were catching other objects than the center one I was trying to focus on. But, for the life of me, I couldn't figure out how to change it to center priority or just plain center only. However, on the Rebel XT I was testing, it was just a button push and a wheel spin away.

Can anyone help? Is it even possible on this model?

Quickly (cos I'm rushed this morning), you can definitely set it so that you can select which point using the four way selector. It is a while since I last did that though (most of the time I seem to be focusing manually for complete control) and so I can't remember how off the top of my head. Check the manual (or wait for another D40 owner to come along).

My friend has the D40. All you do is press the direction(menu nav) buttons while in autofocus mode to change left and right on the AF points. No button needed to be pressed to activate switching. So it's actually a step quicker than the XT in this regard.

make sure the camera is in single area AF mode, that might screw with you.

As long as you're not using your camera in Auto mode, you can go into the menu options and select how you want the AF sensor to read. But, as previously mentioned, you can use the d-pad to select the focus points as well.

Sometimes when it's obvious it's the hardest...
