It looks like there might be a new DSLR from Nikon just around the corner - the Nikon D3!

Check out details at Nikon D3 (http://www.livingroom.org.au/photolog/reviews/nikon/nikon_d3.php)

Anyone want to help me rob a bank to afford one of these if its true?

This is definately more of a serious pro camera if its real, and looks like nikon are upping the bar yet again in the DSLR market,

Hopefully they will release a new entry level DSLR soon too.

On the upside the price on a nice used D2x will probably drop :)

51 AF areas? For serious? A bit of overkill methinks.

51 areas? Unless the camera is very clever, how does that not become 50 more chances of picking and focusing on the wrong subject? I suppose that it is probably more focused on those taking action shots and tracking moving objects across the screen.

I already use group AF on the D200 because it's too complicated to do single area.

Just did a small read-up on group AF. Whoa. Talk about smarts!

You know, when I shoot fast action shots with the Canon 1D Mark II with its 45 points, it's surprisingly accurate in terms of focusing on what you actually want to shoot. I'm willing to go as far as to say that it focuses on what I want it to focus on about 99% of the time.

So I'm guessing that Nikon's system will be every bit as smart as Canon's, if not smarter since it's *newer*.

BTW, anyone know why Nikon went to using CMOS instead of staying with CCD sensors?

I just love looking at things I could never afford. Gold Lotto isn't doing me any favours...

I was just contemplating earlier that this beast plus the new 600mm f/4 VR, aswell as a host of other new and nescessary lenses and accessories would cost around the same as a new VE Commodore.

There's a conundrum . . . I think I'd be paralyzed if I had to make that choice and not end up buying anything!!

I was just reading in the Nikon Digital Learning Group about the Nikon rep who is the first photographer to actually get to use this camera. Talk about wow on the high ISO performance! See his examples here (http://cliffmautner.typepad.com/my_weblog/2007/09/ok-its-after-1a.html) if you're interested.

Very impressive. Also, of course, very expensive - as a hobbyist, I think I will be sticking with my D40 for a while yet :D

Oh yeah, I can only drool at it. It will probably several numbers down the line that I'll be able to afford something like that.

I just started looking at M.A. programs in Photojournalism . . . I really want this now. Not sure if I can afford it, but this plus a D300, plus the 14-24, 24-70, and 70-200 VR would be really nice.

Those images were damn nice! Great photographer too. I'm even more impressed now, I've seen ISO test shots at 100% from ISO 200 up to 12,400 (subject was the 14-24 f/2.8) but it's even better to see it under actual circumstances. By the way, ISO 12,400 on the D3 was better than 3200 with the D80. Haha.

I just wish I could afford the D300 though for it's amazing high ISO performance and speed, these two new bodies are just so usable in low light situations.

I under if Nikon didn't pick 51 Auto Focus points on purpose. It fits too well with Area 51 :-)
