View Full Version : Body or Lens...

The problem I find when I'm out walking and taking spontaneous shots is that I have no difficulty composing the shot I want to take in my minds eye, but that I always have the wrong lens on the camera to do the job. Depending on what I was taking a shot of, by the time I change the lens the moment has passed of the shot is no longer their due to other factors.
So I've been thinking of buying another Alpha body and having my two most used lenses always available all the time; one with my 18-70mm and the other with either my 50mm prime or 75-300mm depending on where I am. The body by itself is reasonably cheap. (much cheaper than the telephoto zoom lens that I can't afford!).
Is there anybody who has been here and done that? Any comments Pro or Con?

No, I've only got 1 camera body. A lot of pros use 2 (or more!) with different lenses, whether they shoot sports or weddings. Personally I don't think I could handle more then 1!

Another body would mean another camera bag, another camera bag would mean space for more lenses, more lenses would see me kicked out of home... hmmm... maybe I should start thinking about another body!!... (kidding kidding!!)
I only have the one, but sometimes I would love another... don't think it will happen in this lifetime.. sadly :(

WOW, and I thought it was just me. When I have the 55-200 it seems like I need wider angle and when I have the 18-55 I always find something that is just too far away. Guess that is why they make an 18-200 -- but you pay big bucks for it.

Shooting two bodies isn't that hard, but I don't run into those kinds of problems very often. I rarely use tele outside of sports, so it may just be my style.

The Alpha body is currently going for NZ$1300. The 500mm f/8 Reflex lens is currently listed at NZ$1700.
The lens is winning.

What exactly are you going to shoot with a 500 f/8? Doesn't seem very practical.

Shooting sports I find myself in numerous situations where a second body wood be most handy.
Hmmmm My D80 with my 80-200 f/2.8, and a nice D200 with my 300 f4.
Yeah that wood work!
