WEll i'm planning 2 pick up a SLR camera in the next few days.. its the normal nikon vs canon problem... but I've got another query...
How important is the warranty on SLR camera's .. do they give problem easily ?
The reason I'm asking this is that the warranty these guys are giving with the camera is only a 1 year.. local warranty..:(... the problem is that i do lot of international travel.. so I might not be able to avail the warranty if needed.. so is it really imp ?

I haven't had any problems with my camera. It's been dropped (accidentally, of course!) and taken out in bad conditions.
Are you talking about manufacturer's warranty or what the seller offers for extra money? I generally don't buy extra warranties for anything. They seem tobenefit the seller more than the buyer.

And Nikon's warranty is a 5 year warranty. I can't speak for Canon, so I'm sure someone else will pipe up with their info.
But anyways, Nikon's warranty is an international warranty as long as you have your yellow warranty document and your original sales receipt (from Nikon's site (http://support.nikontech.com/cgi-bin/nikonusa.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_sid=8wRKvPjh&p_lva=238&p_faqid=9677&p_created=1081355310&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9ncmlkc29ydD0mcF9yb3dfY250PTE4J nBfc2VhcmNoX3RleHQ9d2FycmFudHkmcF9zZWFyY2hfdHlwZT0 zJnBfcHJvZF9sdmwxPX5hbnl_JnBfcHJvZF9sdmwyPX5hbnl_J nBfY2F0X2x2bDE9fmFueX4mcF9wYWdlPTE*&p_li=)). Of course, the only problem with any service (Canon included) is that it generally takes a long time, so unless you're going to be overseas for several months at a time... On average I hear the service time for any major problems is 6 weeks approx.

well the guy here said that with the cam ( i think it was the nikon one) there was a 1 year local warranty... i wanted to know basically is this warranty really imp... what i think is, normally if things go wrong it usually after the 1st year.. am i right in assuming this ??
are problems with nikon /canon slrs common ?? and does the warranty usually cover the most common problems ??
Nic, I check with this guy regarding the 5 yr international warranty stuff...

Find a new shop, sounds like they're trying to rip you off. I've found my Nikon SLRs to be well constructed and durable. I use them a lot and not always in the best conditions and my biggest problem is dust, which has nothing to do with the warranty. Having said that, obviously I don't just toss my cameras around and abuse them. Every manufacturer has occassional problems, but they're pretty uncommon with the big players. Usually when there's a serious problem they'll issue a recall, IIRC the 1D MkIII had some AF problem that they caught pretty early and fixed.
Just be sure to fill out the warranty paperwork that comes in the box with the equipment, otherwise you won't get the 4 year extension from Nikon.

I assume your getting a Digital SLR (not a slr). But you might aw sell pick up the warrenty. I would rather have a warrenty that covers somthing, than a warrenty that covers nothing. Now, you need to think, how much money am i willing to spend on the camera? How many mega-pixles do i need?, which handiling style fits me needs? DO you have any canon printers at your home? If so, canon cameras will more than likely be compatible. Check out this page for the EOS 400D(Rebel XTi)

yup i was choosing between the Nikon d40 and the canon 400d...
might end up going for the nikon since I find it more comfortable..
the main things that are drawing me to the canon is the lens compatibality problems of the D40.. and the 10 mp.. since I crop picture often...
I was just worried about the warranty since they we giving only a local warranty in dubai.. and I dont think I gonna be in dubai for too much longer.. so was just thinking that the warranty might not help in this case... unless i can get an international warranty...
I don't know that the Nikon bodies come with a 5-year warranty. I've been reading through the documentation that came with my D40 and the way I read it is that the optics have a 5-year, but the body only has a 1-year.

Yup, looks like you're right Tom. The film bodies still have the 5 year warranty, but it looks like the digitals only have the 1 year one (gotta read carefully obviously).
