Where Was it Taken?
The church near my house; I've taken other shots of the lamps and brickwork, but this was trying something different.

What settings did you use?
Full manual, hand-held. ISO 800 (*wince*), 1/125 shutter speed, f/1.8.

What gear (camera, lens etc) did you use?
Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi (a.k.a. 400D), "nifty fifty" 50mm f/1.8 lens.

Why did you compose the shot as you did?
I was walking past the church on my way to pick up some frames from a shop; I had the camera with my brand-new 50mm lens in the bag I was carrying. I really liked the lamp from that angle as I walked past, and I thought I might be able to capture it hand-held despite not having my tripod with me.

What post production work have you done on the shot (if any)?
Tweaked levels very slightly, added a watermark. That's it!

What were you hoping to achieve with the shot?
Capture the texture of the brickwork and stonework, and the quality of the light. It's an old, old lamp and has an almost gaslight quality to it; I'm a bit of a fan of the Victorian age (though enough of a student of history to know that it is vastly over-romanticized), and I wanted to try and capture that feel.

What did you do well?
I think the contrast and color came out well, and captured the feel I wanted. In this case, the slight grain actually worked in my favor.

How could you have improved it?
Probably if I had brought my tripod along, I could have gotten an even better shot, using a lower ISO.

RainPacket,
When it takes awhile for comments to flood in, can it be you've left us speechless? I saw this yesterday and thought I would wait for the professional others to point out something. Can't wait -
It's a privilege to see these gems. Thank you for concise and enjoyable info.

These settings seem to work relatively well for lamplight in general...
