I haven't done much portrait photography, but today I got a little bit of experience during a photowalk with some other photographers.

We were walking around one of the older parts of Wellington, Aro Valley. It used to be a livestock track in this area, and there are a large number of old Victorian Houses. I was taking a picture of one of these houses when a woman came out and asked what I was taking a picture of.
I told her I was with a group of people, just walking around and photographing for fun, and she started talking, and learned a bit about Wellington, and one of its residents. She was still living in the house she was born in (literally, since she was born at home). She'd lived there with her 3 brothers and her family. There was a small shop under the house. Her father lived to be 107 years old, and one of her brothers contributed significantly to the Maritime museum. Her family was part of a documentary on the area as well. She was kind enough after telling me all these things to let me take her picture.
I was amazed by the woman's character and thrilled to hear such an interesting story. I can only hope that I was able to bring out her personality in this portrait. :)
