The recent posting on Flash Light Signatures reminded me of some images I did years ago after reading an article in one of the popular photography magazines of the day (long before digital photography was even a dream.) Here is the first image which was scanned in from an old color enlargement.

The setup consisted of a 7 watt white bulb in a socket secured inside a V-8 juice can with the top taped such that no light could escape past the long wire coming out of the top. Prior to inserting the bulb, I drilled a 1/4 inch hole in the bottom of the can. This can was then hung from a high point on the ceiling (old house with 12 foot ceilings) . Here is a second image:

A 35mm camera, 28mm wide angle lens, with 25 ASA Kodachrome was positioned on the floor with the dot of light centered in the viewfinder. In a totally darkened room the light was started in a sweeping swinging motion, the shutter opened by cable release but the lens was covered with black cardboard. When the light had stabilized in an even swing, the cord was plugged in lighting the bulb in the can and the card removed until the swing became minimal. At various times, exposures were made through red, green and blue gel filters (placed on the lens before the light was turned on) or no filter at all (can you tell which ones and where different filter colors overlapped?) I tried for a different swing pattern each time. Here is the last one.

I am sure this can be duplicated with a digital camera and wide angle lens. Questions/comments?

Wow! Very cool effect. Reminds me of a drawing toy I had when I was a kid, Spiro-graph (or something like that).

I love this. I'll definitely have to try this or some variation of it.
