Hi,

I am shooting a Nikon D200 and using CS2. I am interested in knowing if anyone is using Nikon Capture NX to process their raw images, and if it is worth the extra cost for purchasing this software.

Thanks.

I have been using Capture NX for about a month now. You might not be able to do as much as you can do in Photo Shop but you can get pretty close.
Nikon in South Africa provide free training as well....Haven't been to the traing due to the silly season but I am planning to go soon.

When I try to open a RAW (NEF) file, I get a pop-up that reads "Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document."

I checked under the Help, About Plug-In, and "Camera Raw" is listed.
So, what's wrong??

Please Help.

Oh..I use a Nikon D80.

Thanks.

In order to read RAW images in Photoshop you have to download and install their Camera_RAW file. Its free and updated regularly as new cameras are added.

I usually use the beta of Adobe's Lightroom to do the initial "processing" on my images. It is supposed to handle RAW, but I cannot get it to open the .NEF files from my D200. However, Photoshop CS2 has no problem opening them. Perhaps Adobe will add the Nikon RAW to the final release of Lightroom, whenever that hits the shelves.

I do not really like the way that Nikon's software behaves, especially on the Mac.

Thanks AZ4Runner. I'll see if I can download the Camera Raw file, but when I checked my CS under About Plug-In, Camera Raw was listed as one of the plug ins.

Do you think it has anything to do with how my camera is set up?? My camera color mode is set to (AdobeRGB).

Thanks

Hi all. Since it has been several months since this thread was first posted, I'd like to bring up the subject of Nikon Capture NX software once again. I just received my D80 about a week ago but have not uploaded any of the software that accompanied the camera as I was already using Photoshop 7.0. Has anyone had any recent experience with the "Capture NX" software? Any benefits beyond what I am currently using in PS? I'd appreciate hearing from you. Many thanks.

Capture NX probably does the best job of any software editing NEFS. Their "Control Points" are very helpful. Because CS3 with ACR 4.2 integrates so much better with iPhoto (where I store my files), I generally only use Capture NX if I want to print the file.

Thanks for your input. I'll give the 30-day free trail a go and see what I can learn about RAW and NEF's.

I've been trying Nikon Capture NX. I wish Nikon would work a bit more on their user interface, and on smoothing out the rough edges (at least on the Mac it just doesn't have the smoothness of other Mac programs). In terms of handling images, it is easy enough, and does a good job with .NEFs. In fact, it handles them pretty nicely. I currently use Adobe Lightroom as my basic open, sort, discard, tweak, and store system (first part of my workflow). Then I use Photoshop CS3 for my complex work (B&W conversion, sharpening, masking, etc.). I need to fix my workflow, but I expect to pick up some insight when I attend the Nikon School Next Step workshop/course later this month (apparently they'll talk a bit about Capture NX).

Best,

Scampi :)

Someone says that Capture NX understands NEF better than any other RAW processing application.

Hi,
As an followon to my 9-28-07 posting, I finally got around to loading the 30-day trial of CaptureNX today. I have read the introduction and much of the instructions on how to use it. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who has been using Capture NX as reading the "manual" is like taking a sip of water from a firehose with so much to comprehend. All thoughts and comments are greatly appreciated.

As another addition, I can't get the ACR plug-in to play nice with CS3. The D200 obviously works fine, but I can't get bridge or PS to read the D300 NEFs. Lightroom, of course, works fine.

@jdepould,
Not sure if this is what you are looking for with respect to the D300:
This is to notify you that we have initiated the Capture NX version 1.3 download service. Capture NX version 1.3 includes support for RAW image of Nikon digital-SLR camera D3 and D300, and Picture Control.

See the download page for further details and instructions on upgrading Capture NX.

I found it as a link going thru the Nikon Message Center for product updates

The latest version of ACR supports the D300 and D3. You might need to download it from Adobe.

I did download it from Adobe, it won't install.

I will generally batch my usual 200 or so shots from any given shoot quickly in Lightroom while the client watches so they can go home knowing what to expect from our session. I have Lightroom automatically update via Adobe so it has no hassle with any file format or new camera type. Lightroom has saved me so much time with my commercial work and I only bother with Photoshop for compositing images or retouching just prior to pre-press or printing.

I tried the trail NX when it came with my old D70 and just didn't like the GUI. I started using Pixmantec RawShooter Pro until Adobe bought them out and handed me a free copy of Lightroom.

Can you users of Lightroom en'lighten' me on what this software does as compared to Photoshop. I have seen it referenced in DPS quite frequently but never knew how it was used. Thanks for your help.

It takes a lot of the most commonly used features from photoshop and ACR and pairs them with a great library/organizer, and a UI that actually makes sense.
