There is something inherently aggressive about nail clippers. When I thought about this theme, I immediately knew I wanted a red background. The fleece blanket we had laying around in the bedroom was an effortless choice.
Here is the set up:

The clipper was placed on a mirror, and the blanked draped behind it. To light the scene I used a Canon Speedlite 430EX with a Cactus wireless remote trigger. The light was softened by a diffuser cap. As you can see in the set up photo, there's no tripod. I do have one, but it's still in the back of the car and I was too lazy to go out and get it. To ensure a proper focus, I placed the camera in AF Servo mode so that it kept focussing, even when I accidentally moved the camera a bit.
The photo was taken at ISO 100, 1/200 shutter time, F/5 aperture using a Canon 60mm F/2.8 USM macro lens.
Except for a little tweaking of saturation and some noise reduction, no post processing was done.
