Over at the blog this week Elise has published a great tutorial (in two parts) on making digital images look old (antique).
I thought it'd be good to have a spot for members to post examples of the results they achieved with the technique.
So head over and read the tutorial (part 1 (http://digital-photography-school.com/blog/antiquing-digital-images-in-photoshop-part-1/)and part 2 (http://digital-photography-school.com/blog/antiquing-digital-images-in-photoshop-part-2/)) - follow the steps and show us what you come up with!
Feel free to post both your original and photoshopped versions

I didn't feel like doing the step 2 part on this one. It's not one of those effects that works on everything. :) So I made a frame for it and did that instead.

This is a bit of a rushed attempt and as I have Elements some of the processes I had to find other ways of doing.

Wow, I love this process! I am having trouble with the gradient instructions, though, I just don't get how to use that thing properly or what that step is supposed to look like.

Do you mean the gradient for the layer mask on the blur layer?
The point of this whole step is to make it look like the pic has a very shallow depth of field. You duplicate the original layer, then give it a good gaussian blur. Watch the background of your pic until it's about as blurred as you like. Next, add a layer mask. Select the gradient tool, and make sure that it's radial, going from black to white. You start from the focal point of the img and drag out. This should result in the focus of the img being pretty sharp and the area around it being out of focus.
If that's the step you were confused about, I hope this helps. :)

It was the gradiant bit I had problems with too. I think because I have Elements I'm not sure I can do a mask. I'm such a novice and just click around and see what happens - I need lessons.

The tutorial is very useful
But its written for advanced users who knows much of PS
Not meant for beginner like me I think
I managed to do it after 45 minutes of struggling
And I dont really understand few of the last parts
just after rendering clouds etc
I just follow the thing roughly and try to make it on my own
But it turned out ok i think

Can some one help me with making the following step--namely the underlined phrase--happen in Elements? I would be most grateful.
Give the layer a mask by clicking the button at the bottom of the layers palette that looks like a circle in a rectangle. Pick the gradient tool (g) and set it to radial. Making sure that the mask is selected, start at the point of the picture you want in focus and drag away from it. The further you drag, the more will be in focus. If it does the opposite, swap your foreground and background colors by hitting x and then try again.
googlit

gstettner:
a way around using layer masks (I don't think Elements supports them) is this... make a selection with the elliptical marquee so that it encompasses the focus of the picture and a little beyond. Put it about where you want the blur to be more obvious. Then go to select > feather and try 75 pixels or so. With your blur layer selected, hit backspace, then deselect (ctrl+d). If you don't like the way it looks, reposition your selection or deselect and try again.
hope that helps. :)

Well I have Elements...so of course things were different and then I ended up not doing some things. This prob. took way longer than it should have, but it was the first "project" for me in Photoshop. I have only used it before for red-eyes! The only thing I really don't like is how it looks like a big circle of light in the pic...but oh well!!

Hi,
My Program is Photoshop Elements 5. I have had the program about a month and have never used it before and I am really struggling. Stupid things like how do I change the colour? Once I had mastered turning the picture to sepia nothing would go right!
I could not make the vignette work and nothing in part two would work either.( Well I gave up in the end).
I have spent about 1 ½ Hrs playing around and have learnt a lot but still have some way to go!
The whole concept of layers is new to me although I understand what the author is getting at , it is a matter of knowing which buttons to push.
Richard.

I deliberately chose a modern image to antique because you can make just about any shot of rural North Dakota look antique with little to no effort. I used Photoshop 6.0, added more noise because I liked it better grainy and liked a darker vignette. I'll try it again later with a more suitable subject when I'm not so distracted. (I'm watching Bubba Ho-Tep for the nth time.) ;)

It helps the photo in that the baby is sitting in an antique high chair wearing a dress from the late 70s or early 80s with an old oven/stove (likely from the 60s or 70s) in the background.

Thanks for the tutorial. It's nice how different you can make the same picture look.
Here's mine. I skipped the second part because I'm not a huge fan of borders on photos.

This is my first post here... so be kind ;)
I tried the "antique" effect from the tutorial on a pic of a Spitfire I took at Duxford last year. My borders came out a bit wrong so I cropped them off... still I am quite impressed with how it ages the actual photo.

I'm new here and LOVE this forum! SO much to learn and so many great ideas from you all!
Anyway, I don’t have Photo Shop so I didn't do this pic step by step with the instructions but tried using bits and pieces of the tutorial. I guess I got a little carried away because I was having too much fun. I think I will improve with practice and some criticism.
I think this will be a great way to make the not so great pics useable and also make the good pics look even better.
I took a bunch of photos at a Cival War reinactment and antiqueing them will make them look so much better! THANKS for the tips and ideas! Please excuse my spelling! I have NO spell check on here. YIKES!

Thanks for the great antiquing tutorial. It was really helpful.
Here's a photo I antiqued of myself. The original was taken by self-timer on a movie set here in Shanghai, where I play a WWII British soldier. It's too bad the set is not in this photo -- it is the same "old 1930s Shanghai" that was created for Spielburg's "Empire of the Sun". It is used often today for movies like "Kungfu Hustle" and recently, the "Mummy 3".
Steven
Although the overall toning is great something didn't look quite right to me. Looking more closely, I notice that the vignette seems to be applied in black. I wonder if it would work better to take a dark tone from the picture and use that instead?
Do you see what I mean?
Wulf
ps. the black on the "leather corners" is fine because that isn't meant to be part of the "old photo".
ps. I've moved this out of the Assignments section and into post-processing, where it fits better.

Thanks for the feedback, Wulf. You are absolutely right.
Here it is retouched.

And the original color:

Although subtle, I think that is a worthwhile improvement. For the subject, I think the result is much more effective than the original.

hi... what is that "photoshop"? Are you talking about a software as a general or is it the name of the software itself?
Photoshop can be used both to refer to Adobe Photoshop software and also as a verb meaning to post-process. It has become part of the jargon, just like most people will understand what you mean if you tell them to google something.

My first attempts at Photoshop in any capacity. Followed the tutorial here and am pretty happy with the results, but I'm sure there's room for improvement. I have no idea how to get the map.psd step to work properly. Also, in the 2nd one, I couldn't get 'drop shadow' to work properly.
Comments welcome, just please use 2nd grade Photoshop vocabulary since I'm just learning this complex stuff....

How and where were you trying to aply the drop shadow? If you were trying to apply it to a portion of your subject you must use the lasso tool to outline that area first.
I like the frist one. Where was this gentleman sitting and what was he looking at?

In the second one, I was trying to apply the drop shadow to the paper layer, or the background white edges. I think I messed up somewhere in the layering. I can't get it to work like I did in the first one, where you can see subtle shadows on the edges of the whole picture.
The man was sitting on his little boat in the old port in Jaffa, Israel. He was fixing his fishing net with his hands and a pair of pliers. It is his handiwork that he is looking at.

I really enjoyed this tutorial! It did take a long time for me to figure things out. Like how to put layers into a "folder" which is really called a "set" in photoshop. But I figured it out!
So here's what I came up with...

I think on flikr my sepia tone looks way more black and white than it did in photoshop. This is my first attempt at manually making sepia tone without using a style swatch preset.
