Nothing new.. I'm sure most have tried this at some point or another. I was bored one night and decided to write some messages with my key chain flash light. I set my camera on top of my counter and switched to shutter priority. I used a wireless remote trigger, but I guess you can use your camera's built in timer. 8 secs was enough for me to spell out my name. Set a longer shutter speed for longer messages. The only thing is that you have to spell it backwards from your point of view for it to be legible from the camera's point of view. Nevertheless its fun to do and made a special one just for the girlfriend

And you can do it without a tripod too. Sometimes it looks terrible and sometimes its kinda cool. I like this one. Excuse my fat toe.

I've never tried writing my name but I did do something similar in a photo I took of my brother's guitar.

Sorry if the color is crap, my scanner sucks...

ever try using a lazer pointer against a wall about five feet away? Then you can write normally

I saw this and it immediately reminded me of this thread. It's a very interesting thing they did with lights so i figured i would share the wealth and show you the videos. Go to this site (http://www.sprintahead.com/?id12=UHPCHP_Billboard_SprintAhead_LearnMore) and click "see the tv spots" to see what im talking about.

Thank you wattsbw2004 for that link. I absolutely love those commercials. I'm in school for multilmedia production, and love trying to figure out how certain effects are achieved.

The first video on the site definitely appears to be long exposures and a time lapse effect, while the second one is clearly different. It is video rather than still shots, with the lighting effects done in post in After Effects with a plugin called Trapcode Particular, much like the glowing light streaks in the iPod Nano commercials.

Those videos are very cool.

The first one is stop frame animation. The film is assembled from a series of coordinated flashlight photographs, just like the ones in this thread -- check out the "making of" video on YouTube, here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lW_9SYaWAQg&eurl=http%3A%2F%2Fstrobist%2Eblogspot%2Ecom%2F2007 %5F07%5F01%5Farchive%2Ehtml). I think the artists are a Japanese outfit called PikaPika -- check out their site (http://tochka.jp/pikapika/).

Thank you ELAY for the explanation. The term "stop frame animation" was escaping my memory. I guess time lapse is over a longer period of time with more frequent shots generally. I also found another great example.

Like it -- nice dash of alt.country to go with the flashlights.

to further correct the time lapse is something along the lines of this (http://youtube.com/watch?v=8-GSzumlhmo). Basically with a camcorder you take a several hours worth or even up to a years worth of video and make the scenes go faster so as to turn hours, days, weeks in to minutes or seconds.

This was the work of my girlfriend:

I still take full credit, though, on account of me calculating the exposure and suggesting the idea in the first place. Ahem.

This was me:

This is my first post and really it's for my boyfriend, so it's not really an entry. We were experimenting with sparklers around the 4th and I thought this photo was a nice fit with this thread. :)

The cell phone one reminds me of a commercial. Anyhow, you guys may want to try using a rear-curtain flash. That will make your bodies sharp, but the effect will be just as good.
