Lone Red Ball

Now this is one of my favorite effects to do in Photoshop, made a little easier by a tutorial I saw on DPS, using the history brush to paint color into a B&W image. The original is below:

Ok, time to go to work. After opening up the image in Photoshop, I unlocked the layer (done by double clicking on it), then made a copy of it. I always make a layer copy, just in case I screw up doing something. I then desaturated the top layer (Image>Adjustments>Desaturate), and clicked on the history brush. I then painted the color back into the ball. Since I was editing it full size, I used brush size 100. I think the effect is great. Edited image below:

The ball does stand out more in the bottom image. But because the top image already has muted colours then the ball stood out anyway.

I have to say that I like the top one better because the bottom one looks to "flat". Also the bottom one looks more like a "set up" than the top one. I think that because of the top one having muted colours then it was already good how it was.

However I do like he actual photo, the composition is good. The ball has been placed to the right hand side which makes it more interesting and also the back ground isn't to "busy" so the ball is deffinatally the main focus.

Overall I think the image is really good, I'm just not so sure about the desaturated image.

Sorry if that sounds harsh, I'm not used to critiqueing post-photography production work.

Those are my thoughts as well. I've been doing this to pictures for years and some just don't look as great as others.

I don't know if this would help, but maybe try making the ball more red so that it really stands out?

Thanks for both the comments, I do like the original image, but I wanted to see if I could make the ball stand out a little more. I could adjust the saturation and hues to make the ball stand out. Again, thanks for the comments.

I think the leaves in the first one look great already - subtle with low colour saturation. Here's another vote for trying to make the ball look more red rather than trying to make the background look even less saturated.

I agree with wulf, try bringing the saturation up on the ball a bit, maybe even playing with its hue.

Hi,
The ball looks more pink than red. Colors like red or bright yellow stand out in B/W photographs.
However this is a good try and am looking in to my albums for a similar subject to alter.
