http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1110/577330167_3ba3c9c2a4_m.jpgI was out in my shop woodworking. I had the roll up door open. All of a sudden a hummingbird comes flying in and racing around. It flew up into one of the skylight recesses and wouldn't fly out. It finally landed on a tiny ledge near the skylight. I ran in the house and got my camera and took a couple pictures. Then I got my ladder and climbed up to try and get him out. He actually just let me pick him (or her) up. I carried it down the ladder and took a couple more pictures. It wasn't struggling at all so I went outside and opened my hand. It just sat there while I took some more pictures. He finally just flew off. I will reward his kindness by hanging his new hummingbird feeder we just got:) I figure I am one of the few people that will ever hold a healthy hummingbird in the palm of their hand.

carycary, Welcome
Don't wash that hand, it's incredibly lucky! I'd say put champagne in the feeder but that probably wouldn't be a good thing. Beautiful shot, and Saint Francis would appreciate your gentleness.

Absolutely amazing! What a great story and a great photo :D
What a fantastic opportunity! It is great that you had your camera to hand - this one has come out really well, with good composition, sharpness and colours.

ps. I've resized your picture down - you can boost it back up a bit but please no more than Flickr medium size (500px wide)

Great photo and great opportunity. Lucky you had a lens on the camera that allowed you to hold a hummingbird with one hand and the camera with the other. Nice to mingle with nature in the wild. Congratulations.

I do believe this is the first time I have ever seen a shot of a still hummingbird. They usually are in flight with their wings going a Gazillion miles a second. Thanks for sharing! A very rare opportunity indeed!:)
