Last week's What Would You Do thread was all about a gorgeous landscape scene from Evran.

This week, we switch to a different subject. Richard has submitted a picture of a cat for you guys to work your Photoshopping skills on :)

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/231/514178093_b8a22480c0.jpg

View large here (http://farm1.static.flickr.com/231/514178093_6a1335ae8a_o.jpg)

As usual, do what you do best to make the picture your own. Change it, turn the cat orange, crop in and focus on the nose... do whatever you think would make this picture into something that's your own (note: these are not serious suggestions... though if I see a zoomed in orange nose I'm gonna know that someone took me far too seriously :p). Have fun with this shot, and show us what would you do!

For anyone who wants to have a picture used in a future thread, please send me a PM with links to the medium and large size of the picture. If you have any questions, send me a PM or ask here. I'm always so thrilled when you guys are excited enough about the thread to send in new submissions to be featured (and of course, I'm also excited when checking to see what people have done in the thread).

Now, let's see what you'd do.

Selective colour: increase black
Increase contrast
Selected around eyes and nose, then played with Curves layer
Then, of course, Unsharp mask

Here's my attempt.

1. Duplicated Background. Selected 'Overlay' and set Opacity to 51%. Applied Gaussian Blur (7.1 pixels)
2. Applied the following settings for 'Selective Color'.

Reds: -16%, +81% , -23%, 0%
Yellows: -81%, -48%, +3%, 0%
Magentas: 0%, +12, -1%, +1%

3. Used 'Curves' with following settings.

Red: ( 85, 99) & (128, 176)
Green: (102, 117) & (134, 178)
Blue: ( 91, 123) & (123, 175)

1/ Crop 2/ Cloned (not that well) the black background to remove the brown areas. 3/ Sharpened the eyes slightly 4/ Levels adjusted.

Cropepd it down. Played with color levels a bit. I use Paint Shop Pro and then played with mirror images

My goal for this photo was to emphasize the eyes.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/7845858@N05/631331091/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1308/631331091_8e19e34ca8.jpg" width="500" height="348" alt="What you would do #6" /></a>

What I did:
-Cropped to establish a rule of thirds composition (eye, nose, eye).
-Duplicated layer
-Desaturated the duplicate layer
-Adjusted the midtones of the duplicate layer (-30)
-Erased the eyes on the duplicate layer to allow the yellow eyes on the original layer to show through
-Increased saturation of the eyes quite a bit
-Cloned out some eye blemishes to make them more uniform
-Also cloned the pattern from the left eye into the right eye so the two eyes would match better
-Added a 'sunburst' to the light spot in the left eye
-Added borders

Can anyone help? The post that I placed on this thread has received a comment and a fave on my Flickr account, although I had credited the photo to Richard, I still feel a bit funny about getting comments etc for other peoples shots. Is there any way that I can post on this thread without having the image in my Flickr gallery?

By the way, well done Richard, your cat is now a favourite of "ziiz" on Flickr.:D

Teewinot - Excellent work, well done!

John, thanks for your comment.

When I post edited photos to this "what you would do" series, I make sure I mark the photo as "private" in Flickr. That way, it shows up on DPS, but no one else can view it on Flickr. I'm sure it's ok what happened to the cat photo since you did give credit to Richard. Perhaps you could just make those sorts of photos private in the future. Hope this helps.

In Adobe Photoshop CS2:

1. Duplicated Layer.
2. Adjusted levels on duplicate layer.
3. Used quick mask to select the eyes and copied them to a new layer.
4. Adjusted the hue and saturation of the eyes and colorized the eyes.
5. Burned the background to make it all black.
6. Selectively burned parts of the dark fur on the cat.
7. Used the sponge tool to saturate the nose more.
8. Applied a crop to cut out most of the black space and the out of focus back side of the cat.

...decided to try another...

No particular focus this time, just playing around with layer blending.

-Merged layers
-Duplicated layer

What I did:
- Pasted an image from a recent business trip into a seperate layer.
- Selective deletion on the original.
- Move the original around a bit relative to the new background.
- Crop.

Wow guys, this one's pretty impressive. The thread has only been up a day, and I'm totally impressed so far. I think it's amazing how many different compositions have come out of the same picture. This is a great example of a WWYD thread :D

Since the original photo was mostly black and white anyway, I decided to apply a sepia tone to it, give it a softening blur, and add a little "Blistered Paint" texture to the background to evoke a nostalgia type feeling.

http://www.creatingonline.com/cat_edit.jpg

Here are the steps I took to achieve this effect:
1. Image/Adjustments/Desaturate
2. Image/Adjustments/ColorBalance
Slide Yellow bar to left to -46
Slide Red bar to right to +12
3. Image/Adjustments/ShadowHighlight
Slide Shadow Amount bar to left to 27%
Slide Tonal Width bar to left to 35%
4. Right click on Background layer and select Duplicate Layer
5. With Background Copy layer selected,
Filter/Blur/Gaussian Blur
Set Radius to 32
6. In Layers window with Background Copy layer selected,
reduce Opacity to 70% and Fill to 70%.
7. Layer/Flatten Image
8. Switch to Quick Mask Mode
Using a large blur brush at 100% opacity, paint the cat.
9. Switch back to Standard Mode.
10.With photo background selected,
Filter/Texture/Texturizer
Load "Blistered Paint" texture
Scale to 150% with Relief set to 3
Light - BottomLeft

JJthethird,
Not to worry, I could have just as easily found myself in that same situation. I learned from Teewinot's advice as well.

Teewinot,
Thanks!! Saved me from the same confusion at some point.

All,
I'm enjoying seeing everyones approach, although I admit I'm a bit relieved that there haven't been any with orange noses (so far). :D

I'm pretty close to a complete newbie with post-processing, so I am also learning quite a bit from this... detailing the steps you took is most helpful!!

I thought I'd share what I had done (with my admittedly minimal photoshop skills!) to this photo before submission:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/richarddigitalphotos/514317964/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/235/514317964_144bf56724.jpg" width="500" height="441" alt="IMG_3470-1" /></a>

I think everyone would agree that it isn't nearly up to the standards shown here. With the approaches you all have shared, I now should be able to do much better.

Thank you all so much for sharing your perspectives on what you would do!

Nicole

Ah, but you should only judge the photo against what you would do to it. Some people enjoy taking a more minimal approach to photoshop stuff, other people love doing 20 different steps to get the picture perfect in their eyes. That's what it's what would you do. ;) So hey, thanks for participating Richard and showing what you would do even if your photoshop skills are "minimal", as you said :)

Always better late than never.

Nothing written down, so this is a suggested guideline. From a series of negatives over copies of original, which were applied at less than 50% opacity and Difference, Darken and other stuff; the last one made this:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/47146451@N00/991894804/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1288/991894804_64314c1887.jpg" width="500" height="382" alt="WWYD6" /></a>

this is how i chose to torture this poor cat

now, i know there must be a way of giving the exact details of how i pp a pic.....but, i haven't yet discovered it......so, if memory serves me correctly, this is it

crop
usm
selective color on the yellows of the eyes
duplicate layer with posterizing filter..blending mode to darken...opacity30%
flatten image
sepia filter at 30%

i love these what would you do threads

Have you tried using a voice-activated digital recorder while you edit? No stopping to write stuff down, no trying to think back on what you did, just talk while you work.

jiminy....

no i have not....and frankly, i fart around with more "fix its" here than i have replied to....surely, there's a way in cs that i can bring up all the actions...any clues?

your idea sounds like a fine one though....i think i remember the mister having one around here a few years ago.....and if i can't figure my way out of this paper bag, i'll go hunt it up......

thanks,

Sorry, I work only with the Adobe PhotoDeluxe. There is one button for "Undo" which is all the history I get, one action backward. Talk about paying attention!

On CS3 I can set my history to however many steps I want.....the only bad thing is the memory usage at higher numbers....I set it at 20.
